Day 24: Santa’s Secret

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVE!

Well folks- we made it. For the fourth time, we made it through all 24 days of tea. Now, since we already talked about this three times already (2012, 2013, 2014) we’re not doing it again! Instead, we’re going to talk about our opinions of this year’s #24daysoftea!! Since it’s our fourth in a row, we figured we can discuss how this one compares to those of the past. So, without further ado, here is the information for secret santa, which we then promptly ignore!

Ingredients: Black tea, peppermint, sprinkles (sugar, rice flour, partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, corn starch, natural and artificial flavours, cellulose gum, red 40 Lake, mono and diglycerides, carrageenan, titanium dioxide (colour), polysorbate 60)

Brooke: So, what did you think of this year’s “24 days of tea”?
Stacey: I’m quite impressed with the variety of teas this year. Many of these ones were brand new for us.
Brooke: Yeah, and even the teas that we had before have changed in their ingredients. Mom, for example, didn’t like the Gingerbread tea last year but this year she raved about it!
Stacey: Yeah, they added chocolate chips I think, which made it nice and  creamy!
Brooke: Exactly- they improved the ones we didn’t enjoy and I was impressed.
Stacey: Yeah generally speaking, the ones that we had had years before were also ones that we liked. And they had a few we didn’t enjoy, like Sleigh Ride, out of the way pretty quickly.
Eric: Did you talk about how cool Snow Day was?
Stacey: The snowflakes went up and down like it was snowing in the cup!
Brooke: Neat! But I gotta say, I mourned Glitter and Gold’s shimmer this year.
André: They’re going to have to re-name it. Gold, No Glitter. Gold Sans Glitter. Just Gold Tea.
Brooke: I’ve also gotta say, I was very unimpressed with the amount of tea in each tin this year. Years past our tins were filled to the brim but this year they were barely two thirds full. We paid more for the calendar this year ($40) but we got way less tea in our tins.
Stacey: Well, they were GOLD tins, Brooke!
Eric: I heard that they had someone testing to make sure each tea tin was twistable.
Stacey: Maybe they were taking tea from yours, Brooke!
Eric: Skimming 25% off the top!
André: Tea heist!
Brooke: Those scoundrels!
Stacey: You know what I liked? The drawers instead of doors. Hey, that kind of rhymed! Quit playing with the bells on my hat!
Eric: I can’t help it!
Brooke: I also LOVED the drawers. Clean, simple, so reusable.
Stacey: Yeah, and I liked how you could turn the drawers around to see what each tea was after, so you don’t have to go searching for the tins when you wanted a specific kind after the calendar was over. For example, we’re going to have Cardamom French Toast tomorrow, I think. Mmm! Wait, what if we have French toast for breakfast? Is that too much?
André: Never too much French toast.

Final thoughts: Are we doing this again next year?

Brooke: I’m feeling like I don’t want to do this next year because of the cost and the difficulty of trying to Skype with the ridiculous time difference and schedule conflicts.
Stacey: I want this advent calendar again, I think. I really liked it. But boy, the time change made this really hard to do. Every day, it was tough.
Eric: What if next year you just did highlights on the weekend? Once a week!
Stacey: And we can always text about it…
Brooke: Maybe this blog is finally ready for a rest.
Stacey; Well… I’m not done with #24daysoftea just yet.
Brooke:Oh, alright!

Day 23: Gingerbread Cookie

Howdy folks!

I’m writing to you from the beautiful town of Penticton, BC, where André and I will be spending our holidays. Snowflakes are delicately falling from the sky, the fields are blanketed in white and the Christmas tree is sparkling in the corner of the living room. No better way to start this festive day than to have a nice tea by the fire. Here we go!

Tea: Gingerbread Cookie

Description: Happiness is…the smell of gingerbread cookies baking in the oven. Warming up with a perfect cup of tea. And sharing something sweet with your family and friends. And with this sweet and toasty tea, you can have all three at once. We started with a smooth base of rooibos, then added a sweet hint of maple and molasses. Then we warmed it up with spicy cinnamon and crystallized ginger. Finally, we added a dash of yerba maté for an energizing kick. With this in your tea cupboard, happiness is just a steep away…

Ingredients: Rooibos, green rooibos, honeybush, cinnamon bark, currants, candied pineapple (pineapples, cane sugar, citric acid), crystallized ginger (ginger, sugar), maple sugar, white chocolate (sugar, partially hydrogenated palm kernel oil, whey, milk, mono and dig)

Stacey is a busy researcher with meetings and appointments and a Star Wars viewing, so André‘s mum Cheryl is stepping in and joining the blog today. Our bestie, MK, is also back from her adventures in India and England and her voice is helping out, too.

André: Is this my mug?  The one with the holly on it?
Cheryl: Have a holly, jolly, Christmas!
André: Oh! It smells so good it made me hiccup!
Cheryl: That’s different.
André: It smells very spicy- I can feel the rooibos but I’m trying to pick out all of the spices in this. Cinnamon? Ginger?
Brooke: This smells delicious.
André: Ooh, I just put my nose in it. Now it smells like hot.

*sip*

André: Wow, that’s an awesome tea. Like, this is great. It tastes just like gingerbread with a mild hint of rooibos.
Brooke: Oh yes, this is yummy! Normally rooibos teas are a bit hollow for me, it just tastes like rooibos bark with spices. This one, though, is heavier thanks to the maté. I really enjoy it!
André: Yeah, much thicker than a usual rooibos.
Cheryl: I like it better than a green tea- those taste like grass floating in water.
André: Mm. It’s like having a liquid gingerbread cookie inside my mouth.
Brooke: Where else would it be?
André: In a bath.
Brooke: Of  course.
André: I really enjoy this one.
Brooke: Me too. I love it, even with the awful chemical taste still in my mouth from my bummer of a root canal the other day. MK says that the tea reminds her of a cross between an Indian Chai and a cinnamon bun. And that since the taste isn’t right for me, she will give us some in Kelowna when we visit. What a Christmas miracle!

Final thoughts:

AndréI find this tea is remarkably well balanced. The flavours of the gingerbread and its spices compliment the rich tastes of rooibos. It’s Christmas in a cup.

Brooke: I really, really enjoyed this one. Something about it made it creamy and thick which, as André mentioned, rounded out the rooibos bark quite well. I’m looking forward to having another cup post-Christmas with MK.

Day 22: Snow Day

Hello fellow tea connoisseurs!

Today Brooke and Andre are up bright an early to start their Christmas journey to visit with Andre’s Mum in Penticton. Which means we get to have the tea at normal morning time for me! Hurray! Well, I do feel bad that they have to wake up so early, but is nice to have the tea so early in the day. Today’s tea isn’t really fitting for most of the country, but hey, at least we can have a snow day in tea form!

Tea: Snow Day

Brooke: Up with the tea.
Stacey: Whoa! Good morning!
Brooke: After my root canal I had an overwhelming metalic taste in my mouth. Even after a few hours rest and multiple tooth brushing I still taste it, so this tea may taste bloody awful.
Stacey: Oh man, this is so early for you. You poor thing. I hope it tastes good for you too, maybe the tea will bring in some good flavours.
Brooke: It smells lovely. I’m disappointed it’s an herbal though. I’m gonna need the caffeine, seeing as it is 5:45am.
Stacey: I also have a caffeinated tea. I am double fisting! Can we sip now?

*sip*

Brooke: We’re both making gross faces. Stevia and mint. Ick!
Stacey: There’s no stevia in this tea though! I think it has a creamy, minty taste. I like it!
Brooke: We all do not! Andre said he would drink it but he didn’t say he’d like it.
Stacey: Aw man! So just me then?
Brooke: Honestly, for me, the metallic is dampening everything else.
Stacey: It reminds me of cocomint cream, but without the coconut.
Brooke: I don’t think I liked that one either. I am going to eat this candy cane instead. Except not bite it because I have a mummified tooth now. 😦
Stacey: Aw you poor thing. I’ll keep sipping the tea though!

Brooke and I also had a chance to ask our Moms what they thought:

Lorie: It smells like peppermint chocolate! I’m currently crushing candy canes to go on my Candy Cane Shortbread Bars, so this the perfect tea to compliment the smells! Mmm I like this tea! Very cozy, like you are in front of a fire looking outside at the snow falling on a snow day. We can only wish for that this year unfortunately.
Cathy: I think I like it! Peppermint-y and fun! Traces of chocolate for the sweet tooth, yet calming.

Eric also had a few things to say:

Eric: I’ve never had a full cup before, it really feels like it is coating my mouth with warmth. I wonder if it would be good as a sore throat tea.

Final Thoughts:

Unfortunately Brooke and Andre didn’t care too much for this one. I, on the other hand, thought it was a nice warm, creamy brew that was a good mix of chocolate and mint. And it sounds like Lorie, Cathy and Eric agreed! Eric and I also thought it was neat that the snowflake sprinkles went up and down in the water as the tea was steeping. Anyone else experience this effect? It was almost like it was snowing in the cup!

Well, only two more teas left folks! Who would have thought December would go so quickly! We hope you’re all ready for the holidays or almost ready so you can enjoy the season with loved ones. See you tomorrow!

Day 19: Dark Chocolate Delight

Hi steepers!

Day 19 brought friends and dental work- what a day! While Stacey and Eric had our friends Des, Kathryn, and Steve over, I had just gotten back from a poke and a prod from my dentist when we settled down to discuss today’s tea. Lots of catching up, chatting, and tangents occurred, but we did talk tea enough for a blog post. Here we go!

Tea: Dark Chocolate Delight

Ingredients: Black tea, spiced dark chocolate (cocoa beans, sugar, cocoa butter, ancho chili, nutmeg, cinnamon, salt, allspice, clove, chipotle chili, ground vanilla), blueberries, cocoa shells, natural chocolate flavouring.

Kathryn: It smells like mild chocolate.
Steve: How can it be mild? It either is chocolate or it isn’t!
Brooke: Well, some advent calendars have “chocolate-y treats” in them that aren’t even real chocolate, maybe it smells like that? Either way, it smells delicious and I’m excited.

*Sip*

Brooke: Hm. Chocolate water!
Stacey: It’s supposed to have spice in it. Peppers and stuff…
Desiree: I think there is supposed to be cumin in it.
Brooke: I just steeped mine for 5 mins, but maybe it should have been there longer? I don’t taste any spices.
Stacey: I thought we’d be able taste some sort of spice.
Brooke: Didn’t we have chocolate chili chai once before? Did you know, root canals are expensive?!

A tangent ensues- then we’re back on track.

Stacey: Hm, we only had a few teaspoons for the whole pot I made, I think ours might have been too weak, too.
Brooke: Yeah we need to steep it with more tea and for longer, I say. There are flavors in there that I want to taste!
Desiree: Yep, nothing too special about this one. I can taste the spice a little bit, though. I can tell there is something there but I want more.
Stacey: Yeah, I don’t really taste cloves, cinnamon or any spice.
Kathryn: Yeah, it’s is *okay*
Brooke: Aw man, you’re going to Upper Canada Village- so envious!

Second tangent on time difference, friends, and co-ordinating tea reviews, before final thoughts occurred.

Final thoughts:

Everyone agreed that while this tea had a neat chocolate flavour to it, we all were left wanting more spice. Our next cups of this will be steeped longer and with more loose leaf in hopes of hitting the spot.

Day 15: Honey, I Dew

Happy December 15th everyone!

As seems to be a trend this year, our schedules and the time change only allowed me and Brooke to sip our teas together for about 10 minutes. At least we can fit in a few minutes, right? Onward!

Tea: Honey, I Dew

Description: In Vietnam, melons are a sign of good luck. In Chinese medicine, they’re said to help cool the body down. Around here, we think they’re just about the tastiest fruit around – especially when you pair them with fresh, delicate white tea. With fruity hints of pineapple and mango, this melon-packed blend is refreshing, juicy and naturally sweet. The best part? This tea was named by our customers! Is there anything they can’t dew?

Ingredients: Apple, white tea, pineapple, (pineapple, sugar), melon (melon, sucrose, calcium chloride, citric acid, natural melon flavouring), mango (mango, sugar), rose petals, natural watermelon flavouring)

Stacey: I have so many little bitties in my tea. I would show you but I think I would spill tea on my keyboard.
Brooke: Well that certainly wouldn’t be very good. Keep it safe!

*sip*

Brooke: This tea would be SO nice in the summer as an ice tea! It has all the things you would want in an iced-tea, so much so that you wouldn’t even need to put a sweetener it like agave syrup.
Stacey: Agreed, but because it’s a white tea I don’t mind that it’s warm. It has the flavour of sweetness, without being too sweet…if that makes sense.
Brooke: I feel very weird drinking something so fruity at 8 in the morning.
Stacey: I feel less odd because it’s 11 am here.
Brooke: I think DavidsTea did a good job capturing the flavour of honeydew melon. I absolutely taste that.
Stacey: Agreed, I think this is a rare tea where you taste exactly what you smell. Also there’s apple in here.
Brooke: Right, it is the first ingredient. Dang.

Brooke had to head to another Let’s Talk Science event, so we continued our review via text: 

Stacey: I like this tea, but I’m not blown away.
Brooke: I am drinking it now, it’s at room temperature and wow! So much nicer. I would drink this all the time!
Stacey: I’d say it would be an “every now and then” tea.
Brooke: Mmm, Stacey! It’s like calorie-free juice. Still tea-y but fun!
Stacey: Actually, it isn’t calorie free. The website says there are 10 calories per cup.
Brooke: Ack! My blood sugar!

My Mom also had a few thoughts for today’s tea:

Lorie: This tea would be great iced, it tastes exactly like melon. It makes me think of summer and eating melon in my backyard.

Final Thoughts

Stacey: This tea didn’t necessarily ‘wow’ me, but it did have a lot of good flavours. I think I would have to try this one cold to give it a full review, but if you like honey dew this one’s for you!

Brooke: I say have this brew cold, or not at all. It was a very strange feeling to have such a sweet and fruity drink so early in the morning and so darn hot, but when it cooled down- voila! Its existence made sense. 🙂

Honey, I Dew want this on ice

Day 11: Hot Chocolate

Hello friends!

Brooke is off at a full-day conference today, so it will be just me reviewing the tea. Who knew time change would be so difficult for two roomies who want to enjoy a cup of tea together? In any case, I’ll try to bring some excitement by adding thoughts from my co-worker Poppy, and Eric to round out the post. Let’s see how hot chocolate tastes in tea form!

Tea: Hot Chocolate

Description: We take hot chocolate pretty seriously around here. It’s gotta be rich, decadent and mega-creamy. And after searching high and low for the ultimate hot chocolate tea, we finally found the perfect blend. We took a flavourful base of pu’erh and black tea, then we added real cocoa nibs and fudgy chocolate chips. The result? An uber-chocolately blend worthy of the name Hot Chocolate. Dark, sweet and totally satisfying, it’s the perfect winter treat.

Ingredients: Pu’erh tea, black tea, cocoa nibs, chocolate chips (sugar, chocolate liquor, cocoa butter, soy lecithin, vanilla), chocolate curls (sugar, cocoa butter, whole milk powder, chocolate liquor, whey powder, lactose, soy lecithin, vanilla), stevia extract

Since Brooke wasn’t able to have the tea with me today, that meant that I was able to have it right in the morning. It was quite the change!

Stacey: Well this is definitely a pur’eh.
Poppy: It’s kind of got a smokey taste to it.
Stacey: Yeah, not as sweet as I was expecting.
Poppy: I don’t hate it but I don’t know if I love it. It kind of tastes like watered down hot chocolate.
Stacey: Almost tastes like one of those chocolate calcium chews…not sure if that’s a good thing though. Any final thoughts?
Poppy: I probably wouldn’t buy it myself, but I would drink it if someone offered it to me.
Stacey: And that’s exactly what happened!

Later this morning Eric also provided his two cents: 

Eric: It’s a sweet tea that hit its mark in terms of the flavor. Unfortunately it doesn’t quite live up to what a hot chocolate is, especially like the one we had on the canal. I’m sure a foamy late version of it would make it much more enjoyable.
Stacey: Agreed, earlier Poppy and I were saying it was almost like a watered down hot chocolate. I almost prefer this though, mostly because hot chocolate is often too sweet for me.
Eric: Good point, I almost never drink hot chocolate because the sweetness is overpowering. So the watered down might not be a failure but rather a way to make it more enjoyable for us.
Stacey: I would be interested to try this is in a latte format though.

Final Thoughts: 

Stacey: As usually, as the tea cooled down the more flavour notes were present. This tea has a nice smooth creamy factor to it that bring out different layers of chocolate. I really enjoyed drinking this one but probably wouldn’t make it one of my regulars. Glad I got to try it though with 24 days of tea!

Day 9: Cinnamon Rooibos Chai

Hi tea drinkers!

Today was another busy one; Stacey was in meetings all morning and I was off teaching science to grade 8s…in French! Phew! Look at us. To add to the fun, I decided that it would be a great idea to speak about the tea today en francais. Let’s see how it turned out!

Tea: Cinnamon Rooibos Chai

Ingredients: Rooibos, apple, cinnamon. With natural cinnamon flavouring.

Stacey: Brooke I HATE this tea.
Brooke: What?! You haven’t even sipped it!
Stacey: I just remember this tea from one of our previous posts and I think every word out of my mouth was “ick” and “yuck”. It’s just too sweet for my taste buds. But my Mom said that it reminded her of cinnamon hearts that her Dad would get her every Valentine’s Day.
Brooke: Aw, that’s super cute. I love how tea can evoke such vivid memories.
Stacey: And my Dad really liked the tea, probably because it was so sweet.
Brooke: Well it certainly smells like candied cinnamon hearts to me.
Stacey: Ugh, I don’t want to drink it.
Brooke: But maybe it’s different this time, Stace! Give it a chance.

*sip*

Brooke: [Cue the French] Que penses-tu?
Stacey: Oh….It’s not as bad as I remember. I mean, wait, um…
Brooke: Tu l’aimes?
Stacey: Wait why I am I the one typing this? I won’t be able to know what you’re saying. My French is okay but not necessarily “scribe” ready!
Brooke: That is going to make that much better.
Stacey: Er… Ce n’est pas…sweet? (sucré) aujourd’hui.
Brooke: I find it doesn’t really go well with my pickle. I mean…Je pense que le goût…
Stacey: Oh god.
Brooke: …ne vas pas avec ma lunch.
Stacey: Ma lunch?
Brooke: Déjeuner? Parce que j’ai encore le goût de cornichon dans ma bouche. Je suis d’accord avec tes sentiments, Stacey. Ce thé n’est pas aussi sucré qu’on a pensé.
Stacey: Okay, back to English, I can’t handle this.
Brooke: Well, we tried!
Stacey: I think it’s not as sweet this time because DAVIDsTEA changed the ingredients again. Ah yes, no honey or orange peel this time.
Brooke: Yeah, André was harping on the orange zest last time too, so he may enjoy the blend this year! Hooray!

Final Thoughts: 

Stacey: Any other thoughts Brooke?
Brooke: I am going to give this one away.
Stacey: Oh, why?
Brooke: I just I don’t think I would have a craving for this type of tea. Cinnamon has never been a flavour I have searched for in my food. In the same way I don’t much like cinnamon hearts and hot lip candies, this tea really isn’t my jam. It’s neat, though. Just not one I’d reach for.
Stacey: I actually like this one better this time, surprisingly!
Brooke: Well, my Mom approves of this tea, too.
Stacey: Mom and Dad approved! Win!

@joolstothegools I like Day 9, but I’m mixing it with a caffeinated chai because MORNINGS.

Day 9 was a strong & festive tea. Might be in the running for #1.

Day 14: Sugar Plum Forest

Hello Readers!

Happy Sunday! Today we were in the Christmas spirit and decorated sugar cookies with our friends Desirée and Jason and went to Brooke’s Aunt Tracey’s house for a lovely dinner. With all of this excitement, we know we are a little late in our post, but we had a nice morning and are sharing it now. Enjoy!

Brooke: Ooooh! Sugar Plum Forest!
Stacey: Oh good, I need some liquid.
Brooke: Um?
Stacey: I mean I need to be hydrated before yoga!
Brooke: Right.

Tea: Sugar Plum Forest

 

Description: Whether you’re out sledding or just doing some holiday shopping, there’s no better way to stay warm and cozy than a piping hot mug of tea. And this tartly fruity, lightly spiced blend is the perfect winter companion. Just one sip and you’ll have visions of sugar plums dancing in your head. Not to mention apple, hibiscus, ginger and warm winter spices. It’s the perfect shot of warmth on a chilly winter day.

Ingredients: Apple, hibiscus, rooibos, ginger, licorice root, raisins, cinnamon, rose hip peel, plum, cardamom, star anise, bruised pepper, cloves, chili pieces, artificial flavouring.

Steeping Instructions: 1.25 tsp, 96 °C, 4-7 minutes

Brooke: Pink tea #4! I’m getting initial hints of the cloves upon first sniff.
Stacey: Oh yeah, agreed.
André: I want to sip it but I think I’ll taste hot again.

*sip*

Stacey makes a face.
Brooke: I wish I could take a picture of your face and have that as how you describe it. It’s beautiful.
André: I can’t describe this one. It’s like another one I’ve had but I can’t place it. Forever nuts, maybe? Roughly the same weight but the difference is Forever Nuts is like, “hey, I’m a toasty cake.”
Brooke: Wow, it tastes nothing like it smells! It smells like cinnamon hearts but tastes…oh. There’s so much fruit in there… but it doesn’t taste sweet. It tastes like olives again!
Stacey: What? No, I think it’s a bit tart.
Brooke: It’s weird, I don’t hate it but I would never have it again.
Stacey: I think there’s too many things going on.
Brooke: It’s almost like a subtle soup broth, you could put some carrots in there and eat it. How.. strange.
Stacey:  Yeah, there are too many flavours that didn’t mesh well and it was overwhelming. They should be complimentary but this was too much!

Tea vibes:

As we like to do, we spoke our final thoughts on the tea at Stacey’s phone, which thought we were saying this:

André: Affinity is very late and free. Yeah, it’s  a tasty river dance.  More fruit and veg. 4 of 10.

Brooke: I don’t like this T. I don’t like its levers. I don’t like the density. Big foot artificial flavours are ever ok, diner. Fun have a 10.

Stacey: I wish I like this T. It has its name, um, but it’s better than others we had so as I am 5 on time hello.

We seem to be getting angry about all these flavours being mixed together without our consent! Maybe we’re getting to be grumpy tea connoisseurs who need a bit more simplicity in our brews. Who knows? What do you think about all these extra and artificial flavours? Yay or nay? We didn’t feel like dancing to this one!

Maybe tomorrow will be different?

Day 15: English Breakfast

Happy  Sunday evening, everyone!

It’s getting colder by the hour here in Ottawa and it’s a slipper kind of day in our downtown apartment. Stacey pulled out this tea and it suited us nicely- something to warm us up and keep us going on this chilly day!

Tea: English Breakfast

There’s nothing better than waking up to a genuinely fabulous cup of English Breakfast tea. Which is why we took great care in choosing our signature blend. We were looking for the perfect balance. Something with body and a satisfyingly full flavour, without being overpowering. The winner? A flowery pekoe from Sri Lanka. You’ll find yourself drinking it all day long.

Ingredients: Sri Lankan black tea.

Instrctions: 1.5 tsp, 98°C, 4-5 min

Stacey: We don’t often get to try “normal” Davidstea teas! I’m excited.

Brooke: Yes- a nice simple black on a cold day like today should be just right!

*sip*

Stacey: Mmhmm! It is! It’s so nice.

Brooke: Oh yes.

Stacey: I think it may even have more flavour than the nourish tea English Breakfast, which is saying something.

Brooke: Definitely their “base” black tea, but it’s still quite nice. Might be worth a dollop of almond milk to round it out.

Stacey: You know me and milk and tea. I think it’s just fine the way it is.

Brooke: What imagery comes to mind when you close your eyes and sip this delightful brew?

Stacey: Oh, we haven’t done that in a while. 

Stacey: Hey! I was thinking that, I just didn’t SAY it!

Brooke: We are roommates. I know you.

/rant and ramble about our six years together as roomies/

Brooke: Ok, imagery, Stace. Cough it up.

Stacey: It’s interesting, I have two images. I’m in Chateau Laurier sipping high tea and then outside, doing some rugged backwoods camping. Two extremes. Actually, not camping, something more intense and hard working… like a coal mine! This is a prize for finishing your work, you know?

Brooke: So it’s not a start your day kind of tea, it’s more of..

Stacey: No, it is! This is for people who wake up really early and start they actual day. I feel more away since drinking it. Am I rambling?

Brooke: No! Caffeine’s great.

Tea vibes:

Stacey: If we didn’t have all the english breakfast from nourishtea, I would want to pick this up and have it as a staple in the cupboard. You can have this tea on any occasion and it’s something you’d be familiar with. Not too bitter- I like it! 4/5

Brooke: Yep, it’s a classic done right. No tricks- just a lovely solid tea that we should always have on hand for our many guests clambering to have a tea with us (hah!). No sugar needed but I’d toss a bit of milk in there to bring it out fully. Yum! 3.5/5

So now you all know what to get your coal miner friend for Christmas! No need to thank us. ; )

Day 14: Cinnamon Rooibos Chai

Hi readers!

Stacey is bustling away in the kitchen making snowcap cookies for yet another potluck and I’m writing up a paper on microRNA, but we know the drill! Today, we bring you a spicy yet sweet Cinnamon Rooibos Chai!

Tea: Cinnamon Rooibos Chai

Cinnamon Rooibos Chai (organic) from DAVIDsTEA

Description: Stay Focused

Cinnamon is so much more than just the tastiest spice around. According to aromatherapy principles, it supposedly enhances your ability to concentrate. Plus it has a clean and refreshing taste your breath will thank you for. Your new favourite beverage also contains South African rooibos, Zanzibar cloves and citrus oil. Delicious.

Ingredients: Red Rooibos, orange peel, cinnamon, cloves, natural honey and cinnamon flavouring.

Instructions: 1.5 tsp, 98°C, 4-7 min

 Stacey: Hmm.. This cinnamon smell is scary!
Brooke: What if it tastes like hot lips?

*Sip*
Stacey: Noope! Oh, no! Too sweet!
Brooke: It’s not that bad!
Stacey: I dont’t want anymore!
Brooke: You have to try, Stace!
Stacey: Too sweet!
Brooke: You already SAID that!
Stacey: I dare someone who needs to put sugar in their tea every time to put sugar in this. Oh God.
Brooke: Oh my.
Stacey: Once you get over that, though, it’s a nice hit of cinnamon! It just tickles the tip of my tongue!
Brooke: You’re right, though. This sweet isn’t fruity sweet- it’s just so.. sugary! Like they dumped a few tablespoons into my cup!
Stacey: Yeah, wow. I can’t even really get the orange and clove because of it. I don’t want to discount it as a bad tea… because it isn’t. I just don’t particularly like sweet teas.
Brooke: Yeah, you were never a fan of adding milk or sugar to your teas. I don’t think I the like sweetness  either. Mom, though, would love it, I bet.
Stacey: My Dad would also love it. He would probably add more sugar. Guaranteed.

Brooke: You should dare him.

Tea vibes:

Brooke: Normally rooibos teas are earthy but this is the first time I’ve had a sweet one. If you try to ignore the slap of sweet- this tea has some great hints of cinammon and clove that are deliciously spicy. Unfortunately they do get masked by the overwheling feeling of drinking a latte or something similar.  I don’t think I’ll have it again! 2.5/5

Stacey: This tea doesn’t taste artificially sweet- it feels more natural. I wish there was more cinnamon. It’s not really a tea for me but I do know a lot of people who LOVE this tea so if you like sweet sugary teas- give it a try. 2/5

Oops! Apparently we prefer spicy to sweet and this one had too much sugar for our tastebuds. But don’t be discouraged by our numbers, folks. We’re just two roomies having a tea, after all! ; )
