Day 24: Santa’s Secret

Merry Christmas Everyone!

It’s Christmas Eve and thus we get to sip on Santa’s Secret! This tea isn’t much of a secret anymore since we’ve had it on the 24th of December for three years in a row now (see here and here). But as much as we’ve been harping on DAVIDsTEA for using repeats in their 24 days, this is one tea that we were were glad to see return again this year. MmmMmm!

Tea: Santa’s Secret

Description: Ever wonder how Santa manages to deliver all those presents in just one night? Well here’s the hush-hush formula. He uses a special combination of black tea, peppermint and spices – all sprinkled with real little candy canes. It’s both energizing and remarkably soothing. All Santa needs is one cup and his motto changes from “ho ho ho” to “go go go”

Ingredients: Black tea, peppermint, sprinkles, natural and artificial flavouring (vanilla maybe?)

Steeping Instructions: 1.5 tsp, 96°C, 4-6 minutes

Before heading off to visit Brooke’s sister, Lisa, Brooke and her parents were able to sit down with Stacey for a little Skype session to review the tea:

Stacey: It’s supposed to be spiced black tea this year…that’s new.
Brooke: I can smell the peppermint, mmm!

*sip*

Stacey: I love this tea!
Brooke: Mom, what do you think?
Cathy: It’s too hot to drink!
Stewart: The first note is a hint of butterscotch.
Brooke: Hmm, but there’s no butterscotch in here. There is vanilla though…
Stewart: Yes, it must be the vanilla that I’m tasting.
Brooke: I really love that this tea has a black tea base because usually peppermint teas are quite strong. The black tea mellows this brew out though so that the candy cane doesn’t hit you in the face.
Stacey: Ha ha, candy cane hitting you in the face.
Stewart: *Bonk*
Brooke: “Santa, his abuse is no secret.”
Stacey: Do you get any of the spice?
Brooke: Not really, but the sprinkles are adorable!
Stacey: I could drink this all year round! So minty!
Brooke: That’s the beauty of this tea, the peppermint is in the background acting as a supporting character.
Stacey: Agreed!

With that, Brooke and her family were off to the airport, ready to spend a Christmas in North Carolina. A little later in the day, Stacey’s parents came home from work and were in the mood for a cup of something hot:

Ken and Lorie (simultaneously): We’re ready for tea!
Stacey: I’ve got just the one! And we can add it to the blog!
Ken: So as you know, I don’t usually don’t read your tea blogs but I did read one this year. I wanted to tell you there were so many spelling mistakes!
Lorie: They are supposed to be like that, it’s the voice type feature. It’s supposed to be funny!
Ken: Oh!

*sip*

Lorie: It’s very smooth tasting…like eggnog.
Stacey: But that was yesterday’s tea!
Ken: It tastes chocolate-y to me.
Lorie: It’s very relaxing for Christmas Eve, I’m glad I get to have it after a day at work.
Ken: I like it but it smells better than it tastes. It tastes like one tea that we’ve had before, maybe Read My Lips?
Lorie: Yes, this tea is making me feel very mellow.
Stacey: But now you’re supposed to be all “go-go-go”.
Lorie: No-no-no.

Tea Vibes:

Using the voice-type feature on our respective devices, we were able to provide our thoughts on today’s tea:

Stacey: I absolutely love this city! It’s so christmas to me and I love doing it every year. It’s just perfect! So tell me, I know that’s a lot but seriously can I test.

Brooke: This, he’s pretty good. I’m probably a favorite of the whole box! So we’re happy to have them overall. I think that the government gets to stay on the bench in this. To you and I think that’s great. Merry Christmas! No I don’t, N.

Well folks, that’s a wrap! Thank you so much for joining us on this wonderful tea tradition of ours. This year may very well have been the last 24 days of tea that we were able to spend in the same apartment, so it’s been extra special for us. Thanks again for following along and keep your eyes peeled for a few more special tea reviews in the New Year.  Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Until next tea,
Stacey and Brooke

Sorry Santa, I think your secret’s out!

Day 24: Santa’s Secret

Hello readers!!!

It’s Christmas Eve and you know what that means….WE DID IT!  After this post we will have officially reviewed every tea from DAVIDsTEA 24 days of tea AND put out a blog every day! Go us! And just like last year Brooke and I have thoroughly enjoyed the process. Although it was a bit difficult at times with our busy schedules, we are so glad we completed the set! So without further adieu let’s get down to it, let’s taste Santa’s Secret brew!

Tea: Santa’s Secret

Santa's Secret from DAVIDsTEA

Description: Need a little helper?

Ever wonder how Santa manages to deliver all those presents in just one night? Well here’s the hush-hush formula. He uses a special combination of Chinese black tea, peppermint leaves and spices – all sprinkled with real little candy canes. It’s both energizing and remarkably soothing. All Santa needs is one cup and his motto changes from “ho ho ho” to “go go go”

Ingredients: Chinese black tea, peppermint leaves, candy cane sprinkles.

Steeping Instructions: 1.5 tsp, 98°C, 4-6 min

I was a little late coming into the tea review yet again (this one hour time difference is tough!), so Brooke’s Mom, Cathy started us off:

Cathy: Wooof! That’s a smell. Is that ever pepperminty! If it tastes as good as it smells, I’m going to love it!

*sip*

Cathy: Cough, splutter, cough. Oops!

Cathy: Mmm!

Cathy: It’s really good! I don’t really like black tea but with all those sugary candy canes…yum! Maybe I just need to put a candy cane in all my teas?

Cathy: I quite like it! It inspires me to do my Christmas recordings for 107.7FM.

Back in Bolton, my water finally boiled so I  was able to hop on Skype just in time to review the tea with Brooke while Cathy ran a few errands.

Stacey: Mmmm.
Brooke: Ahhhh!
Brooke: I love that this is a black tea.
Stacey: Yeah, because often times peppermint tea is a herbal.
Brooke: Mmm, the black tea weighs down the peppermint quite nicely.
Stacey: So glad we are enjoying this on the day we are supposed to, unlike last time when we were having it in March.
Brooke: I am going to make short work of this cup, oh boy.
Stacey: Mhmm, a perfect Christmas blend!

Those who were with us last year will remember that we enjoyed this tea quite a bit the last time around…only we sipped on it closer to Easter than Christmas. So it’s a bit more fitting that we are actually sipping this tea on Christmas Eve.

Brooke: This is good- I like how the black tea rounds out the flavour.
Stacey:  Mhmm. It is quite tasty and adds something quite festive to the black tea.
Brooke:  A bit too sugary though.
Stacey:  Oh really? From the candy cane?
Brooke: Yes.
Stacey: Hmm, I don’t really get that. I just get nice hint of it, like I stirred my tea with a candy cane. Delish!

Tea Vibes:
Brooke: What a great way to end the set! And how lovely that we get to enjoy Santa’s Secret on his special day. This is a great tea to wake up to and enjoy its smooth tones mix with lovely mint. Merry Christmas to ME! Oh, and you. 4/5
Stacey: This was a lovely tea–so lovely in fact that I will be enjoying a cup of this tomorrow morning as well. It makes you feel more Christmassy with every sip. Mmm, mmm! Santa did well with this brew. 4/5
And that’s a wrap (pun intended)! Thank you so much for joining us on this wonderful journey! We are hoping to follow these posts up with a review of our favourites from the set, so look for that in the New Year. For now, Brooke and I are going to take a much needed break from writing. But not a break from tea–never a break from tea, goodness no. We hope that you and your family have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Until next tea,
Stacey and Brooke

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good tea!

Santa’s Secret

Readers!! Readers!!

We’ve DONE it! We are on the LAST DavidsTea Day of Tea! That’s right, with this final post, our 24 Days of Tea venture will be complete. Stacey and I realize that we’re three months overdue and that “Christmas” is a little passé but hey. Bring it on Santa. We’ve got this.

Santa's Secret from DAVIDsTEA

Tea: Santa’s Secret

DAVIDsTEA description: Need a little helper?

Ever wonder how Santa manages to deliver all those presents in just one night? Well here’s the hush-hush formula. He uses a special combination of Chinese black tea, peppermint leaves and spices – all sprinkled with real little candy canes. It’s both energizing and remarkably soothing. All Santa needs is one cup and his motto changes from “ho ho ho” to “go go go”.

Ingredients: Chinese black tea, peppermint leaves, candy cane sprinkles.

We each scooped 1.5tsp into our mugs and added 98°C water, letting them steep for a total of 6 minutes. We were a bit apprehensive what with the mini candy canes and holiday spirit.

Brooke: Huh. Weird, it smells like chocolate mint but there’s no chocolate ingredients.
Stacey: It smells like Read My Lips! Wait, is it sacrilegious to have Christmas tea at Easter? Not that we’re religious.
Brooke: Nah, Santa and the Easter bunny won’t mind.
Stacey: Cheers!

*sip*

Brooke: Whoa. Christmas.

Stacey: Yup! Oh man, this would have been really good to have on Christmas eve! Hey, at least it’s cold out today…

Brooke: No seriously, this is a 100% perfect Christmas tea. The flavour is really specific. This isn’t just a mint tea, it’s a candy cane tea.

Stacey: Why didn’t we just cheat and have this on Christmas eve? Aw, I feel jipped.

Brooke: STACEY!

Stacey: Does it say that it’s smooth?

Brooke: No, it says it’s soothing.

Stacey: I’d change it. It’s smooth, there are no harsh flavours.. just.. candy cane..

Brooke:

Stacey: I guess I’d call that soothing then. Oh.

Brooke: It’s such a nice and sweet feeling.

Stacey: Saving the best for last, DAVIDsTEA, wow. Next Christmas, this one is coming out early.

Brooke: I love it. I just… I love it! It’s so perfect for the holidays, you’re right. It’ll be a must have next season.

Stacey: Mhmm! Mmm.. Mhmm! All of the images from Christmas are flooding in right now.

Brooke: Yeah if we closed our eyes we could imagine all of the decorations are still up on the mantle, our lights are shining on our porch…

Stacey: Yep. It reminds me a lot of that other minty tea Read My Lips… but I like it better.

Brooke: Why?

Stacey: I don’t know… it’s more subtle. It doesn’t throw all of these different flavours at you.

Brooke: Oh Santa, you sly dog, you! Can I have some more?

Tea Vibes:

Brooke: Ahh. This tea is a delightful reminder that there are perks during winter. Its smooth and creamy texture brings the warmth right into your centre and its candy cane flavours bring out all the Christmas cheer you didn’t even know you had. I would happily recommend this to all when it comes out again next winter (but let’s not think about that right now). Deliciously delightful. 9/10

Stacey: I would say that if I were Santa, I would definitely choose this tea over a glass of milk. [Brooke: But Stacey! You don’t like milk!] That’s beside the point!  This is a really good tea and I would recommend it to anyone for the holidays. It gives you that Christmas imagery you so often crave when you lack the white Christmas. It reminds you of spending time with the family. It’s a very nice smooth black tea; not too harsh. The mint is wonderfully delicious- it stays with you the entire sip, not very strong, just constant comfort. Merry Christmas. 9.5/10

And with that, our 24 Days of DAVIDsTEA journey is now complete. We did it! Look forward to a special Easter Egg post coming soon, featuring Stacey’s extended family, as well as a summary post with our favourites and recommendations from the set.

Thank you so much for following along for these past few months. As we begin our next adventure with Nourish Tea in the next few weeks, we hope you stick around to try them with us. : )

Until next tea,
Brooke and Stacey
