Day 4: Pink Flamigo

Another early morning, and the two roomies are having a quick breakfast and a hot tea to start their day.

Brooke: Day 4! Day 4! It’s all ready for you open, Stace!
Stacey: Yay!!! … …. ….Awwww, man. Pink Flamingo? But… that’s a summer tea.
Brooke: It’s true, Pink Flamingo was in the collection of iced tea Andy got me…
Stacey: But.. but.. aw. I didn’t want this. 

Tea: Pink Flamingo

Description: Ready for spring break? Try this sweet, citrusy cocktail of oranges, tangerines and lemongrass. It’s got hibiscus and beetroot to turn it a natural shade of hot pink, plus blackberry leaves for a sunny burst of Vitamin C, apple and carrot for extra sweetness, and eucalyptus leaves for kick. Sound irresistible? Try it iced. In a martini glass. With a splash each of cointreau and gin. And a paper umbrella. Caffeine-free.
Ingredients: Hibiscus blossoms, apple pieces, carrot flakes, blackberry leaves, eucalyptus leaves, lemongrass, beetroot pieces, freeze-dried tangerine/orange slices and artificial flavouring.
Steeping Instructions: 1.25 tsp, 96°C, 4-7 minutes

Brooke: See, it’s pink! Just like forever nuts!
Stacey: *grumble* It smells too sweet for me.
Brooke: Reading the description Pink Flamingo sounds like a V8… but in tea.
Stacey: YUP.
Brooke: Oh, Stacey is PISSED.
Stacey: I just wanted a nice, comforting black tea today. Oh shoot, I need to leave soon.
Brooke: Are you going to use that mug?
Stacey: Yeah, why?
Brooke: Because that mug looks dirtaaay!
Stacey: *sigh*

*sip*

Stacey: Oh! Hmm, is there lemon grass in here?
Brooke: Yep.
Stacey: I can taste that…Not as sweet as I thought it would be. But it’s not supposed to be a hot tea.
Brooke: Stace, it can’t NOT be a hot tea, that’s not how it works.
Stacey almost drops her mug, clearly losing it. 
Brooke: Well, so much for any of the other flavours they listed. LEMONGRASS FOREVER. Not bad, I’m just not feeling that flavour right now. I could try putting it into my smoothie later.

Unfortunately at this point Stacey had to leave for work.

Stacey: (while walking to the bus to work, thinking to herself) I know I was being a bit negative about this tea, but it was rather lovely on my walk to the bus. As the cold nipped my thighs (Brooke: jeez, a little much?), I would take a sip and be immediately transported to a beach. It could be just me but I thought the tea had quite powerful imagery. And it made my walk much more tolerable.

Brooke: This tea is weird and really shouldn’t be a 24 Days of Tea tea, it’s not really evoking the sense of coziness, more of sunburns and sore throats. Ice cubes ONLY, people! 6.5/10

Stacey had fun with her voice-type feature again and had this to say:

Stacey: No one excited for this day!! However it did grow on me and I enjoyed it on a walk to work and it is quite delicate I’d give it a 7 on 10.

Well, there you have it. Pink flamingos may have a spot on the cold icy roads of Ottawa in the eyes of Stacey. Brooke and her pal MK agreed that it tasted more like neocitrin, though. Bring on the throat lozenges!

Day 12: Kokomo Green

Hello readers!

Brooke and I are doing another quick review today because of course we are running around to our various activities. Phew, putting out a review a day is tough! Not to mention this is my third caffeinated tea today. Weeee!

Tea: Kokomo Green

Description: Ooh We Wanna Take Ya

Want to get away from it all? Somewhere exotic, perhaps? Try heading for a little place called Kokomo, where the sun is always hot and the drinks are always ice cold. Where fresh green tea mingles with the fruity, tropical flavours of pineapple, mango and papaya. A place where every aroma is intoxicating and every sip ends in a smile. Yes, this magical place really exists…and we’ve got your first class ticket right here. Down in Kokomo, you’ll be falling in love.

Ingredients: Green tea, papaya, mango, pineapple, rose petals, marigold petals, cornflower petals.

Steeping Instructions: 1.25 tsp, 93°C, 5-7 min

Stacey: Ooo, this smells fruity and nice.
Brooke: Yes, there’s papaya and mango. Real AND artificial! It kind of smells weird when it’s steeped though.
Stacey: Oh…yeah…kind of smells like…throw up.
Brooke: It’s a weird mixture of green tea leaves and fruit.

*sip*

Brooke: Oh. It’s not bad.
Stacey: That didn’t sound too exciting.
Brooke: Nope. (goes back to typing)
Stacey: It’s kind of…bland.
Brooke: I mean it’s not bad. You get a really nice rush of citrus, but nothing too sour. It’s just a bit of an odd mix, when you throw in the green tea leaves with their signature taste.
Stacey: I don’t really taste the citrus though or anything really.
Brooke: Green tea often has a soft taste.
Stacey: But it doesn’t even taste like green tea to me.
Brooke: I think you’re being a little harsh. It’s no coffee cake.
Stacey: No. *sigh*
Brooke: I don’t know. It would make a fantastic iced tea in my opinion.
Stacey: I agree. As an iced tea you could add some honey if you wanted to add a bit more flavour. It would probably quite refreshing on a summer rollerblade or something.
Brooke: Yeah, I think it shouldn’t really be in the 24 days of tea though. It’s a little inappropriate if we are going to stick with the theme of winter and holiday teas. You need a couple of ice cubes and straw if you are drinking this. I don’t dislike it, I just think it’s not the right season for it.

Tea Vibes:

With all this talk of Kokomo Green being a good iced tea, Brooke and I decided to try it out.

Brooke: Hmm. I would be nice on a hot summer day but not now. 2.5/5 from me.
Stacey: Better, but it would still need some honey or something. 2.75/5 But only if it’s iced.

Well everyone, this may not be the right tea to drink today (given that it is -22°C (feels like -27°C)), but hey, at least we’re halfway through the countdown! Christmas is almost here–hooray!

Japanese Sencha

Hello friends!

So usually when Brooke and I review teas, we do so in the warmth of our cozy apartment. Especially with -39C weather. Today… we made an exception. We ventured out on a freezing cold day in Ottawa to drink and review our tea elsewhere. Why? As soon as we smelled our Organic Japanese Sencha steeping, we could only think one thing. SUSHI.

Tea: Organic Japanese Sencha

DAVIDsTEA Description: Light and Brisk

Japanese monks were writing about tea in the 9th century, but the world had to wait until 1740 for Sencha, when a tea merchant named Nagatani perfected a new process of steaming, rolling and heat-drying green tea. The result? An emerald-green tea that’s refreshing, smooth and high in antioxidants. No wonder it’s Japan’s most popular drink.

Ingredients: Fine organic steamed Japanese green tea from Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan.

To get started we put 2 tsp of tea into a tea pot and let our leaves steep in 74°C for 3 minutes. With one whiff, our stomachs were in the mood for a full on sushi lunch, so we poured our tea into travel thermoses and were off!

Stacey: Want to have a quick sip before we head out?
Brooke: Yeah, let’s do it!

*Sip*

Stacey: Oh yes, definitely a sushi green tea.
Brooke: Sushi!!!

On our way to our favourite sushi joint, Sushi Zone in the Byward market, Brooke dropped her thermos (of course). Luckily she had a Contigo thermos from Costco and not a drop of tea was spilled. (Shout out to Brooke’s Mom for that wonderful buy!)

Our walk to the market was not a long one but we were very  happy to be sheltered from the elements after being exposed to wickedly cold wind. Once we began to thaw, we took our order and we were ready for an all-Japanese experience.

Adorable Woman Behind the Counter: Would you like a drink with that?
Brooke: Oh no, thank you. We’ve got that covered.

*omnomnom* …*sip*

Brooke: Mmm, this tea has a bit a more flavour than the tea you would typically get at a sushi place. I think they steep their tea for less time, so it’s usually a bit more watered down. With ours you can really taste the  difference in the sencha preparation.
Stacey: Yeah, I wish we had it in little cups like sushi places though, it would complete the experience.
Brooke: It’s a great strong flavour, perfect with our salmon and tuna rolls. Wow. Best tea review ever. I wish every tea made us have the urge to go eat out!
Stacey: The question is, would we be drink this without sushi?
Brooke: …I would. Totally. A small amount, though. Not a whole cup.
Stacey: I think it would depend on the day for me. I wouldn’t take it to work but I would enjoy this at home.
*pause to eat more sushi*
Stacey: This is way too big; I mean, how do they expect you to put ALL that in your mouth? Really?!
Brooke: LOL…. Hey, you know, it’s been 40 minutes since we steeped the teas and the flavour is still just as strong. I say we try putting our brews in a thermos for the next teas that we review. Spencer, an avid reader of ours, suggested we try this to maintain the flavour and temperature of the tea. After this experience, it seems like it does wonders for both!

Brooke went on to say how happy she was that we were out eating sushi together and she was grinning from ear to ear. While I was also pretty happy, I was less…uh…expressive with my emotions.

Stacey: Brooke, I don’t know how you do it, being so animated when you’re happy. I would get so exhausted.
Brooke: Well Stacey, I say if you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands!

Tea Vibes:

Brooke: Great green tea. It’s got a wonderful aroma that fits perfectly with you. I’d love to have some of this in our cupboard as long as we’re not constantly rushing out to get sushi. Bam. Also, shout out to Contigo thermoses, you kept my tea hot and safe when battling Ottawa weather. Win! 9/10

Stacey: I have to agree with Brooke on this one, this was one tasty green tea. It was the perfect match for sushi but don’t worry if you find yourself without this tasty dish; this tea stands on its own. Its toasty flavour will have you feeling good and ready to conquer the day (even if involves cold Ottawa weather). I would be interested in having more of this tea more often. 9/10

Mmm, looks like Brooke and I are back on track. Tune in next time, when we hopefully review another tea that prompts us to dine out. Yum! Yum!
