Day 19: Dark Chocolate Delight

Hi steepers!

Day 19 brought friends and dental work- what a day! While Stacey and Eric had our friends Des, Kathryn, and Steve over, I had just gotten back from a poke and a prod from my dentist when we settled down to discuss today’s tea. Lots of catching up, chatting, and tangents occurred, but we did talk tea enough for a blog post. Here we go!

Tea: Dark Chocolate Delight

Dark Chocolate Delight

Description: What is it about dark chocolate? Its taste is sinfully decadent, but studies say it might actually be good for you. But wait – it gets better. Now you don’t even have to wait until dessert to get your fix. With this black tea blend, you can treat yourself anytime, anywhere. With cocoa shells, blueberries and big chunks of luscious dark chocolate, it’s a deliciously rich taste of our favourite indulgence. Welcome to the dark side…

Ingredients: Black tea, spiced dark chocolate (cocoa beans, sugar, cocoa butter, ancho chili, nutmeg, cinnamon, salt, allspice, clove, chipotle chili, ground vanilla), blueberries, cocoa shells, natural chocolate flavouring.

Kathryn: It smells like mild chocolate.
Steve: How can it be mild? It either is chocolate or it isn’t!
Brooke: Well, some advent calendars have “chocolate-y treats” in them that aren’t even real chocolate, maybe it smells like that? Either way, it smells delicious and I’m excited.

*Sip*

Brooke: Hm. Chocolate water!
Stacey: It’s supposed to have spice in it. Peppers and stuff…
Desiree: I think there is supposed to be cumin in it.
Brooke: I just steeped mine for 5 mins, but maybe it should have been there longer? I don’t taste any spices.
Stacey: I thought we’d be able taste some sort of spice.
Brooke: Didn’t we have chocolate chili chai once before? Did you know, root canals are expensive?!

A tangent ensues- then we’re back on track.

Stacey: Hm, we only had a few teaspoons for the whole pot I made, I think ours might have been too weak, too.
Brooke: Yeah we need to steep it with more tea and for longer, I say. There are flavors in there that I want to taste!
Desiree: Yep, nothing too special about this one. I can taste the spice a little bit, though. I can tell there is something there but I want more.
Stacey: Yeah, I don’t really taste cloves, cinnamon or any spice.
Kathryn: Yeah, it’s is *okay*
Brooke: Aw man, you’re going to Upper Canada Village- so envious!

Second tangent on time difference, friends, and co-ordinating tea reviews, before final thoughts occurred.

Final thoughts:

Everyone agreed that while this tea had a neat chocolate flavour to it, we all were left wanting more spice. Our next cups of this will be steeped longer and with more loose leaf in hopes of hitting the spot.

Twitter reacted with mixed responses:

Missed yesterday’s so I combined it with today’s. Forever Nuts and Dark Chocolate, it tastes freaking AMAZING!

DAY 19: Dark Chocolate Delight: not as delightful or chocolately as Hot Chocolate.  Olivia is enjoying her dark chocolate delight tea today 🎅🏼🎄🎁

Well, we may not have steeped our tea long enough today but we certainly had a great time chatting it over with friends. Tangents and all!
Until next tea,
Brooke and Stacey (and Kathryn, Steve, Desiree, Eric, and Andre)

Nothing like a hot tea while enjoying some Christmas lights!

Day 7: North African Mint

Hi fellow tea steepers!

Welcome to Day 7 of #24DaysofTea, where we somehow let a groggy and still-in-bed Andre one-up our review of this tasty blend. Take it away, generic description and ingredient list!

Tea: North African Mint

North African Mint

Description: Explore Northern Africa, from its souks to its deserts, with this intense combination of spices and mint. It combines organic green tea and peppermint with organic cardamom, ginger, licorice root, fennel clove and black pepper. Deliciously sweet, with all the romance of the Maghreb.

Ingredients: Green tea, ginger, peppermint, cardamom, licorice root, fennel, clove, black pepper

Stacey: My Mom said this tea doesn’t really taste like mint, which is odd because this is a mint tea…
Brooke: Guess we will see-  I remember liking this one. It’s one of Andre’s favourites, so it’s gotta be good!

*sip*

Brooke: Mmm..
Stacey:  Oh! Oh. Wow.
Brooke: I love this! Mmm! I mean, it’s not like an herbal peppermint, it’s got some caffeine to it because of the green tea leaves. And is that licorice? No, it can’t be.
Stacey:  Yes, ingredients say there is licorice and fennel in it!
Brooke:Well then, there you go.
Stacey:  I like that it has a nice earthy flavour to it.
Brooke: Mhmm, this is the type of tea that you can’t steep for too long, I bet. I think the flavours would be too strong if you did. This one has to be soft on the palate to be fully enjoyed.
Andre: (Groggily from bedroom, through the door): Are you ….drinking North African Mint? That’s my favourite…. It reminds me of chai tea because of the cloves. ..And I like the pepper in it. The …. added mint really lets you taste the spectrum of flavours, from cool to spicy, you know? Depending on how long you steep it… the spectrum will be hit somewhere different. Mmm.. (goes back to sleep)
Stacey: Wow, I feel like we don’t need to be review the tea any more, Brooke.
Brooke: We’re out of a gig!

Final thoughts:

Brooke: This tea is great because you taste the pepper, cloves, licorice, and ginger. It’s so complex and really comes together quite nicely.
Stacey: I am really digging the mix of flavours.Glad they didn’t change much about it from last time we tried it. I think it’s more than just mint tea, so don’t be fooled by the name!
(Sleepy Andre gives North African Mint 5/5)
Brooke: I like how he contributed most of this post but didn’t even sip the tea.

Twitter was equally impressed with today’s tea:

organic north African mint! Delicious and delicate flavour! This calendar was a great investment~
  – Day 7 – North African Mint – perfect for soothing my sore throat
Day 7 N. African mint! A complex green tea w/peppermint, cardamom, fennel & cloves. Perfect to soothe a sore tummy!

And there you go! Another winner from DAVIDsTEA from the 24DaysofTea set.

Until next tea,

Brooke and Stacey (and sleepy Andre)
