Day 24: Santa’s Secret

Hello readers!!!

It’s Christmas Eve and you know what that means….WE DID IT!  After this post we will have officially reviewed every tea from DAVIDsTEA 24 days of tea AND put out a blog every day! Go us! And just like last year Brooke and I have thoroughly enjoyed the process. Although it was a bit difficult at times with our busy schedules, we are so glad we completed the set! So without further adieu let’s get down to it, let’s taste Santa’s Secret brew!

Tea: Santa’s Secret

Santa's Secret from DAVIDsTEA

Description: Need a little helper?

Ever wonder how Santa manages to deliver all those presents in just one night? Well here’s the hush-hush formula. He uses a special combination of Chinese black tea, peppermint leaves and spices – all sprinkled with real little candy canes. It’s both energizing and remarkably soothing. All Santa needs is one cup and his motto changes from “ho ho ho” to “go go go”

Ingredients: Chinese black tea, peppermint leaves, candy cane sprinkles.

Steeping Instructions: 1.5 tsp, 98°C, 4-6 min

I was a little late coming into the tea review yet again (this one hour time difference is tough!), so Brooke’s Mom, Cathy started us off:

Cathy: Wooof! That’s a smell. Is that ever pepperminty! If it tastes as good as it smells, I’m going to love it!

*sip*

Cathy: Cough, splutter, cough. Oops!

Cathy: Mmm!

Cathy: It’s really good! I don’t really like black tea but with all those sugary candy canes…yum! Maybe I just need to put a candy cane in all my teas?

Cathy: I quite like it! It inspires me to do my Christmas recordings for 107.7FM.

Back in Bolton, my water finally boiled so I  was able to hop on Skype just in time to review the tea with Brooke while Cathy ran a few errands.

Stacey: Mmmm.
Brooke: Ahhhh!
Brooke: I love that this is a black tea.
Stacey: Yeah, because often times peppermint tea is a herbal.
Brooke: Mmm, the black tea weighs down the peppermint quite nicely.
Stacey: So glad we are enjoying this on the day we are supposed to, unlike last time when we were having it in March.
Brooke: I am going to make short work of this cup, oh boy.
Stacey: Mhmm, a perfect Christmas blend!

Those who were with us last year will remember that we enjoyed this tea quite a bit the last time around…only we sipped on it closer to Easter than Christmas. So it’s a bit more fitting that we are actually sipping this tea on Christmas Eve.

Brooke: This is good- I like how the black tea rounds out the flavour.
Stacey:  Mhmm. It is quite tasty and adds something quite festive to the black tea.
Brooke:  A bit too sugary though.
Stacey:  Oh really? From the candy cane?
Brooke: Yes.
Stacey: Hmm, I don’t really get that. I just get nice hint of it, like I stirred my tea with a candy cane. Delish!

Tea Vibes:
Brooke: What a great way to end the set! And how lovely that we get to enjoy Santa’s Secret on his special day. This is a great tea to wake up to and enjoy its smooth tones mix with lovely mint. Merry Christmas to ME! Oh, and you. 4/5
Stacey: This was a lovely tea–so lovely in fact that I will be enjoying a cup of this tomorrow morning as well. It makes you feel more Christmassy with every sip. Mmm, mmm! Santa did well with this brew. 4/5
And that’s a wrap (pun intended)! Thank you so much for joining us on this wonderful journey! We are hoping to follow these posts up with a review of our favourites from the set, so look for that in the New Year. For now, Brooke and I are going to take a much needed break from writing. But not a break from tea–never a break from tea, goodness no. We hope that you and your family have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Until next tea,
Stacey and Brooke

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good tea!

Day 19: Read My Lips

Hello readers!

Day #19! You’re still with us! Today Stacey had to review the tea on the bus on her way to work, so Mom and I incorporated her thoughts in with ours and had a laugh as we drank a hot cup of this chocolatey brew- Read My Lips. Will it be as good the second time around?

Tea: Read My Lips

Read My Lips from DAVIDsTEA

Description: Kiss me, kiss me

Okay, this is probably the world’s best chocolate tea. Honestly. Better than dessert. More reliable than sex. It’s a totally decadent combination of China black tea, vanilla, peppermint, chocolate bits and spicy red peppercorns. Plus it contains little red candy lips for a kiss of sweetness. In other words, it’s a completely satisfying spring experience with no guilt or strings attached.

Ingredients: Chinese black tea, peppermint, dark chocolate, red lip sprinkles, pink peppercorns, natural and artificial flavouring.

Steeping Prep: 1.25 tsp, 96°C, 4-5 min

Stacey (on the bus, alone): This tea smells fan-freaking-tactic! I think it’s the chocolate and peppermint combo that makes it smell so delicious!.
Cathy: Oh she’s right, you can really smell that, it’s great!
*sip*
Cathy: Oooh it’s sweet- I like the chocolate, yummy!
Stacey:This tea is too hot! Yep. Just burnt my tongue.
Brooke: Oooh the mint comes out strong in mine!
Cathy: That’s funny, I didn’t even think of mint… I’m going to go sniff for it. Oh yes, there is it! I like it.
Stacey: Mmm, this is a lot smoother than I remember.
Brooke: So many different flavours to pick out in this one.
Stacey:  Each sip gets creamer and smoother. This is lovely! Especially heading to work.
Stacey: This is so weird typing to my self on the bus without any response…
Stacey:  Also, Christmas Shoes (the song) is playing on the bus. I now have a mental image  of Brooke singing in the movie.
Cathy: Awwww, haha, gawd. Haven’t seen THAT in a long time.
Brooke: Moooom!
Cathy: You were so young!
Brooke: You know, I’m still having trouble finding that peppercorn I want. Bah!
Cathy: Brooke, help me with the tree!
Brooke: But the tea!
Cathy: It’s Christmas!
Tea vibes:
Brooke: Well, I’ve ordered my birthday cake for tomorrow, helped mom put on Christmas lights, written more on my microRNA paper, and now I”m off to my sisters. Oh, tea vibe? Too sweet and not spicy enough! Prooobably won’t have it again. 2/5
Cathy: Gee, I haven’t gotten into this one because I’ve been putting the lights on our tree!  I didn’t taste the peppercorns, but they make me think of steak so I’m glad I couldn’t taste that in the tea. I would have this again but I wouldn’t go and buy more. I like all of the extra stuff in it, so that raises it above my normal opinion of black teas. Mm! 3/5
Stacey:  I’ve said it all–this tea is creamy and smooth and just plain tasty. Last year I made fun of the DAVIDsTEA description but I’m changing my tune this year. If every cup tastes like this one, I’d say it was quite reliable. 4/5
Oops- gotta run readers. Happy day #19!
Until next tea,
Brooke and Stacey (and Cathy)
Christmas classic shot in Halifax back in 2002!

Day 13: Glitter and Gold

Hey tea lovers!

It’s Day 13 and Brooke and I are pooped! Luckily, Glitter and Gold is a tea that we both enjoyed last 24 days of tea… so we had a lazy plan to put into action.  Interestingly, DAVIDsTEA changed the tea description (see below) since the last time we reviewed it. Maybe this time it won’t cause toes to tingle…

Tea: Glitter and Gold

Glitter & Gold from DAVIDsTEA

Tea Description: Twinkle, twinkle

This deep dark Chinese tea is like a gorgeous starry night, glimmering with gold and silver sugar crystals that shimmer as they steep. Take a sip and the slow suggestion of cinnamon will warm your body. Your toes will tingle and your mind will turn to fireworks, falling stars, late-night seduction. It’s basically magic. (Is it getting hot in here, or is it just the tea?)

Ingredients: Chinese black tea, sugar crystals, gold sugar balls, vanilla, orange peel, cloves, natural and artificial flavouring.

Prep: 1.25 tsp, 98°C, 4-7 min

Hey, look, a blog post from last year that was hilaaarious: https://teaconnoisseurs.wordpress.com/2012/12/06/glitter-and-gold/. Click that, pour your tea, and have a laugh.

One thing Brooke and I DO want to note, though, is that clear mugs are a must when enjoying this delectable tea. It’s the only way to see the tea in its full glory. Also, Brooke would like me to remind you to keep your toes safe this Christmas and to bundle them up in warm cozy socks to keep them safe from pesky doorways.

Enjoy everyone! We will be back with more tea tomorrow. : )

Until next tea,
Stacey and Brooke

Everyone deserves a break.
