Day 9: Cinnamon Rooibos Chai

Hi tea drinkers!

Today was another busy one; Stacey was in meetings all morning and I was off teaching science to grade 8s…in French! Phew! Look at us. To add to the fun, I decided that it would be a great idea to speak about the tea today en francais. Let’s see how it turned out!

Tea: Cinnamon Rooibos Chai

Cinnamon Rooibos Chai

Description: Cinnamon is so much more than just the tastiest spice around. According to aromatherapy principles, it supposedly enhances your ability to concentrate. Plus it has a clean and refreshing taste your breath will thank you for. In in this cinnamon-packed rooibos tea, its benefits truly shine. Ingredients: Rooibos, apple, cinnamon. With natural cinnamon flavouring.

Stacey: Brooke I HATE this tea.
Brooke: What?! You haven’t even sipped it!
Stacey: I just remember this tea from one of our previous posts and I think every word out of my mouth was “ick” and “yuck”. It’s just too sweet for my taste buds. But my Mom said that it reminded her of cinnamon hearts that her Dad would get her every Valentine’s Day.
Brooke: Aw, that’s super cute. I love how tea can evoke such vivid memories.
Stacey: And my Dad really liked the tea, probably because it was so sweet.
Brooke: Well it certainly smells like candied cinnamon hearts to me.
Stacey: Ugh, I don’t want to drink it.
Brooke: But maybe it’s different this time, Stace! Give it a chance.

*sip*

Brooke: [Cue the French] Que penses-tu?
Stacey: Oh….It’s not as bad as I remember. I mean, wait, um…
Brooke: Tu l’aimes?
Stacey: Wait why I am I the one typing this? I won’t be able to know what you’re saying. My French is okay but not necessarily “scribe” ready!
Brooke: That is going to make that much better.
Stacey: Er… Ce n’est pas…sweet? (sucré) aujourd’hui.
Brooke: I find it doesn’t really go well with my pickle. I mean…Je pense que le goût…
Stacey: Oh god.
Brooke: …ne vas pas avec ma lunch.
Stacey: Ma lunch?
Brooke: Déjeuner? Parce que j’ai encore le goût de cornichon dans ma bouche. Je suis d’accord avec tes sentiments, Stacey. Ce thé n’est pas aussi sucré qu’on a pensé.
Stacey: Okay, back to English, I can’t handle this.
Brooke: Well, we tried!
Stacey: I think it’s not as sweet this time because DAVIDsTEA changed the ingredients again. Ah yes, no honey or orange peel this time.
Brooke: Yeah, André was harping on the orange zest last time too, so he may enjoy the blend this year! Hooray!

Final Thoughts: 

Stacey: Any other thoughts Brooke?
Brooke: I am going to give this one away.
Stacey: Oh, why?
Brooke: I just I don’t think I would have a craving for this type of tea. Cinnamon has never been a flavour I have searched for in my food. In the same way I don’t much like cinnamon hearts and hot lip candies, this tea really isn’t my jam. It’s neat, though. Just not one I’d reach for.
Stacey: I actually like this one better this time, surprisingly!
Brooke: Well, my Mom approves of this tea, too.
Stacey: Mom and Dad approved! Win!

Day 9 was a strong & festive tea. Might be in the running for #1.

Day 6: Coco Chai Rooibos

Stacey: Oh, we’ve done this one before. That’s not as exciting.
Brooke: Ah come on, it’s been so long! Let’s do it again.
Stacey: It does smell AMAZING. Alright, I’m in.

We made crepes to go along with our Saturday tea, topped with brown sugar, cinnamon and pure maple syrup (sometimes our Canadian roots take over). We also discussed the joys of rock climbing, soup making and making big life choices. A regular morning here in the Market.

Tea: Coco Chai Rooibos

Description: A spicy adventure. If you’re into spice-based chais, this one is for you. It’s got a smooth base of caffeine-free rooibos, and a satisfying kick of cinnamon, ginger, cardamom and piquant red peppercorns. Plus there’s a strong hint of coconut, for a slightly exotic twist. Try it straight up or infused in hot milk for a truly fabulous chai latte. It’s the kind of thing you get addicted to.

Ingredients: Cardamom, Cinnamon, Clove, Coconut, Ginger, Natural And Artificial Flavouring, Pink Peppercorn, Rooibos

Brooke: Oooh, that smells just lovely!
Stacey: Yes, it’s spicy! Those peppercorns really come out.
Brooke: Oh wait, are you sipping it?
Stacey: It was… it was.. lovely. Just, so warm. And just… envelops my throat.
Brooke: Oh my!
Stacey: It’s lovely.
Brooke: Yes, you said that. *sip* Oh, oh that IS lovely. You get a bit nervous when you take your first whiff of it because of the potent smell of peppercorn and cinnamon but when you taste it, it’s SO subtle and perfect.
Stacey: It definitely one-ups the regular Chai experience. I love that it’s a rooibos, too. It’d be one we could have before bed; it’s exciting but it doesn’t prevent you from going to sleep. Mmmm oh yes.
Brooke: Coco-chai, though? Nope. No coconut. We’ve got another misnomer on our hands!

Voice-type feature on Stacey’s phone had its way with our words, and this is the result:

Stacey: I am really enjoying this city on a Saturday morning. Crepes and Brooke and yeah. It has Zachary Novack. I taste it. Call in a house on 10!

Brooke:  This city is spicy yet soft and it will make an extradition to our getting ready for bed routine, which we don’t have. Iphone 10.

After reviewing our previous blog post about this tea, we both agreed that our reviews may be getting sloppy. But Stacey isn’t worried. “We’re having fun as people now”.

Day 2: Vanilla Chai

Evening of December 1st:
Stacey: Oh Brooke, I’m so excited to do 24 days as a proper advent calendar this year! We’ll make the tea in the morning and then I’ll be able to bring my thermos to work.  I can critique the tea on the way, it will be so great!
Brooke: I thought we were going to wake up early and drink it together as roomies? Like the blog post said…
Stacey: Oh… right. Well then, I’m off to bed!

[Way too early in the] morning of December 2nd:
The kettle whistles and Brooke runs down the hallway and pokes her head into the kitchen.

Brooke: I heard the calling!!
Stacey: Bring on Day 2.

Tea: Vanilla Chai


Ingredients: Cinnamon, black tea, licorice root, ginger, vanilla

Description: There’s no better way to warm up a chilly winter day than a hot cup of chai. The combo of rich black tea and exotic spice is like a cup of pure comfort. And this spicy black tea blend turns up the heat even more with a sweet and creamy hint of vanilla. It’s as cozy as a teddy bear wearing a scarf. In front of a roaring fire. While cuddling with a puppy. Try it with milk and sugar for a warming treat that’ll have you wishing for snow.

Steeping Instructions: 1.25 tsp, 96°C, 4-7 minutes

Brooke: TA DA! It’s Vanilla Chai!
Stacey
:
Ohhhh. That sounds interesting…do you think this will taste like a latte since it’s vanilla chai?
Brooke:
No, Stace. You’d have to put milk in it, that’s what makes it a latte.
Stacey: 
Oh, right. I’m still so excited!
Brooke: It smells so good!
Stacey: Mhmmm smooth and spicy.

*sip*

Brooke makes a face and looks up the ingredients of the tea.
Brooke: Oh, okay, wow. Vanilla isn’t even the first ingredient in this! It’s cinnamon,then licorice, then ginger!
Stacey: Yeah, I stand by my original statement: smooth and spicy.
Brooke: I don’t hear the smooth.
Stacey: …You taste it.
Brooke: So it’s a hearing problem today then…eh? Here, André, take a sip. What do you think?
André: Mmm, vanilla.
Brooke: Really? I am bombarded by the ginger and licorice right now! It isn’t really a problem, but… name your teas right, man.
André: Well, I have to go, but enjoy your licorice tea!
Brooke: That’s more like it.

Tea Vibes

Brooke: If I went to to DAVIDsTEA on a cold day and asked, “what kind of tea would warm me up?” they would probably give me this. I would drink it and enjoy it…  but I wouldn’t want to get it second time. Such potent flavours! 7/10.

To make the blogging process a bit easier Stacey decided to turn on the “voice type” feature on her phone. This is what she got:

Stacey: I would have to agree that it does taste like ginger in a Christmas dinner. It is like, soft, like, it’s okay, I’m here. 7/10.

[Brooke: We clearly have to use that feature more often…]

And so ends a successful day 2 of the blog! Roomie time and Stacey still got to bring her tea in a thermos to work. Double win!

Day 14: Cinnamon Rooibos Chai

Stacey is bustling away in the kitchen making snowcap cookies for yet another potluck and I’m writing up a paper on microRNA, but we know the drill! Today, we bring you a spicy yet sweet Cinnamon Rooibos Chai!

Tea: Cinnamon Rooibos Chai

Cinnamon Rooibos Chai (organic) from DAVIDsTEA

Description: Stay Focused

Cinnamon is so much more than just the tastiest spice around. According to aromatherapy principles, it supposedly enhances your ability to concentrate. Plus it has a clean and refreshing taste your breath will thank you for. Your new favourite beverage also contains South African rooibos, Zanzibar cloves and citrus oil. Delicious.

Ingredients: Red Rooibos, orange peel, cinnamon, cloves, natural honey and cinnamon flavouring.

Instructions: 1.5 tsp, 98°C, 4-7 min

 Stacey: Hmm.. This cinnamon smell is scary!
Brooke: What if it tastes like hot lips?

*Sip*
Stacey: Noope! Oh, no! Too sweet!
Brooke: It’s not that bad!
Stacey: I dont’t want anymore!
Brooke: You have to try, Stace!
Stacey: Too sweet!
Brooke: You already SAID that!
Stacey: I dare someone who needs to put sugar in their tea every time to put sugar in this. Oh God.
Brooke: Oh my.
Stacey: Once you get over that, though, it’s a nice hit of cinnamon! It just tickles the tip of my tongue!
Brooke: You’re right, though. This sweet isn’t fruity sweet- it’s just so.. sugary! Like they dumped a few tablespoons into my cup!
Stacey: Yeah, wow. I can’t even really get the orange and clove because of it. I don’t want to discount it as a bad tea… because it isn’t. I just don’t particularly like sweet teas.
Brooke: Yeah, you were never a fan of adding milk or sugar to your teas. I don’t think I the like sweetness  either. Mom, though, would love it, I bet.
Stacey: My Dad would also love it. He would probably add more sugar. Guaranteed.

Brooke: You should dare him.

Tea vibes:

Brooke: Normally rooibos teas are earthy but this is the first time I’ve had a sweet one. If you try to ignore the slap of sweet- this tea has some great hints of cinammon and clove that are deliciously spicy. Unfortunately they do get masked by the overwheling feeling of drinking a latte or something similar.  I don’t think I’ll have it again! 2.5/5

Stacey: This tea doesn’t taste artificially sweet- it feels more natural. I wish there was more cinnamon. It’s not really a tea for me but I do know a lot of people who LOVE this tea so if you like sweet sugary teas- give it a try. 2/5

Oops! Apparently we prefer spicy to sweet and this one had too much sugar for our tastebuds. But don’t be discouraged by our numbers, folks. We’re just two roomies having a tea, after all! ; )

Coco Chai Rooibos

Hello precious readers!

Welcome back to another episode of Tea Time. I’m Brooke, and I’ll be your host this afternoon. Today, Stacey and I dive into the world of spice with a zippy Coco Chai Rooibos. Will it pale in comparison to our rocket adventure or will it spice up our lives? Stay tuned to find out.

Tea: Coco Chai Rooibos

Ingredients: Rooibos, coconut, cinnamon, ginger root, cardamom, cloves, pink peppercorns.

DAVIDsTEA Description: If you’re into spice-based chais, this one is for you. It’s got a smooth base of caffeine-free, antioxidant-filled rooibos, and a satisfying kick of cinnamon, ginger, cardamom and piquant red peppercorns. Plus there’s a strong hint of coconut, for a slightly exotic twist. Try it straight up or infused in hot milk for a truly fabulous chai latte. It’s the kind of thing you get addicted to.

To start things off, we used 1.5tsp of the loose leaf mix per cup and steeped our mugs for 6 minutes at 98°C. We could smell the spices right away but we had some initial concerns with the flavours…

Stacey: Ok, so… the goal of this tea test is to try and taste the coconut. But…man. The cinnamon is still freaking me out. Why is it there??

After removing the tea infusers, we had both noticed hoards of cinnamon debris floating in our cups.  Like… way too many for us to not feel a bit weirded out. How did they escape? What did they want with us?

*sip*

Stacey: you can definitely taste the rooibos, Mmm. I like that.
Brooke: I was worried about the ginger, but it’s really complimentary. Like a gingerbread cookie.
Stacey: But “Coco” Chai? Really? No. There is no coconut here.
Brooke: I might have burnt my mouth off from the Indian food I had last night… but I don’t taste any spicy either.
Stacey: Aw this is fun, Brooke.

We paused briefly to shout about Justin Bieber, as roommates often do. “How could he post that shirtless picture of himself on twitter?” “He met Stephen Harper wearing dirty overalls!”

Stacey: HOLD UP. I TASTE THE PEPPERCORN.
Brooke: I don’t know, this tea is kind of falling flat at the end. It’s just burning the back of my throat.
Stacey: …He got at MEDAL? HE WAS WEARING OVERALLS! There’s still cinnamon in my teeth.

Tea Vibes:

Stacey: Okay, so to be honest, this tea is spicy… but not a hot spicy, just flavourful. I could definitely taste the ginger but the cinnamon unnerved me. I’m always a fan of rooibos so it was nice to have a chai rooibos. Definitely NO coconut, though. Overall, I’d give this tea a 6/10. It would have been a 7 or 8 if the flavours lasted the whole time but they pittered out at the end. I would say enjoy this tea while it’s hot.

Brooke: Couldn’t agree more, Stace. There were delicious hints of gingerbread cookie and cloves at the beginning that unfortunately faded near the end. Unlike black tea based chais, this one was softer and easier to drink without milk. It filled you up nicely but be sure to drink it down before the tea cools, or else you’ll be left with spicy water. I’ll give it a 7/10, because it was certainly delicious at the beginning. Whew!

Overall, we both agreed that the two signature ingredients “coconut and peppercorn” were not accurate. We’d say they were ginger, cloves, and cardamom. It’s a nice tea to have when you’re in the mood for some zip- but drink it quickly! You don’t want to let it cool down as you discuss baby pop stars with your tea partner.

With that, another episode of Tea time comes to an end. Coco Chai Rooibos: a tea that makes you really, really, really wanna zigazig ah.
