Day 18: Forever Nuts

Hello tea lovers!

We’re slowly winding down the advent calendar, with today marking 1 week until Christmas! And while there may not be snow in the air, the hustle and bustle of Christmas is definitely present! Luckily, we opened our drawers to find one of favourites teas today. We have enjoyed this tea every year (2012, 2013, 2014) since we started the tea blog and I think this year will be no exception.

Tea: Forever Nuts

Description: It looks all normal when it’s loose. But steep it and you’ll see that it’s nuts. Within seconds, this tempting jumble of almond slices and chunks, apple bits and cinnamon bark starts turning a crazy shade of pink. Why? Because it contains a hint of beetroot. That’s what gives this rich almond tea its earthy depth and its all-natural signature colour. Deliciously nutty, decidedly addictive. Caffeine-free.

Ingredients: Apple, almonds, cinnamon, beetroot and artificial flavouring.

Stacey: So I may have steeped this for 10 minutes accidentally…
Brooke: Oopsie, I steeped mine for barely 4 minutes, so we can compare!
Stacey: I was excited to find out that this was the tea today because I know how much we love it!
Brooke: Andre has his top five teas and this one is in mine. I was introduced to it one year when my Secret Santa in Halifax wanted it for Christmas. I asked my Mom to pick it up for me and she said “It is a tin full of nuts, I don’t know how this could be a tea”. And so began my relationship with DavidsTea.

*sip*

Stacey: Oh yeah, still good.
Brooke: Ohhh! Sooo good!
Stacey: I don’t know why you like it, it has apple.
Brooke: I don’t dislike apple, I love apple! And this is the only way I can get apple without inflamed lips and a scratchy throat!
Stacey: I think I like this because sometimes when you have almond in a tea, it’s too over powering, but here it compliments the apple and cinnamon perfectly.
Brooke: A lot of the teas so far this year are cinnamon or fruit teas. But this isn’t a cinnamon tea or fruit tea. It is more like eating an apple crumble. It reminds me of the nutty granola on top and the cinnamon sweetness from the apple at the centre. Delicious!
Stacey: But it’s not too sweet, which I LOVE. Often with herbals it’ll be too sweet for my taste.
Brooke: I remember when I was doing my Master’s degree last year and I was having an off-day at the lab. I had made a tea for myself but didn’t turn out right and tasted awful. I had texted Andre to tell him my tea woes and about an hour later he texted me to come outside. And there he was looking oh-so-cool in his leather jacket leaning up against his car with a cup of “Forever Nuts” in hand for me. Swoon.
Stacey: I remember that! So cuute!
Brooke: This tea reminds me of so many good memories. And the apple in it is exactly what you want. This is so worth the little scratch in my throat if I get one!
Stacey: We should have these in cute china tea cups at some point, because the pink would look super cute. The pink is so lovely!
Brooke: Yes, good ol’ beetroot at it again.

Final thoughts:

Brooke: This tea is a liquid dessert that you don’t need to feel guilty having at any time of the day. Not too sweet, with just enough apple and cinnamon to warm you right up. 5 thumbs up!
Stacey: The perfect comfort tea. A must-have… except I don’t have any at the moment. But that’s what Christmas is for, right?

Day 17: Mulled Wine

Good morning (afternoon) tea drinkers!

Today poor Stacey stayed home with a headache while André and I slept in far too late. All of us were a bit groggy as our teas were steeping but we still managed to enjoy ourselves once we got sipping. Who would have thought mulled wine was a nice tea to enjoy at breakfast? Read on!

Tea: Mulled Wine

Descriptions: Maybe you spent the day on the slopes. Maybe it was a frantic afternoon of holiday shopping. Or maybe you’re coming in from an epic snowball fight. No matter what you did on this chilly day, there’s no better way to warm up than with a great cup of tea. And it doesn’t get more comforting than this mulled wine-inspired all natural oolong, with orange zest, cinnamon, cloves and ginger. Whether you’re sipping it at the ski chalet, in front of a roaring fire or just between errands, it’s the perfect way to warm up your winter. 

Ingredients: Oolong tea, apple, orange peel, cinnamon, clove buds, ginger, natural flavouring.

Stacey: I feel like we’ve had something like this before… the smells seem familiar.
Brooke: Sleigh Ride, maybe?
Stacey: Probably? It’s an oolong tea, though. It’ll be different!
Brooke: When I saw which tea it was today I was really excited … but then I smelled the loose leaf tin and was completely turned off. I almost got a headache from the smell- urgh. Far too fruity.
André: Was Sleigh Ride the one I couldn’t even finish?
Brooke: Yep. Here we go!

*Sip*

Stacey: Oooh! I like it!
Brooke: Wow, me too!
Stacey: It’s like Sleigh Ride without the tartness at the end!
André: *cough* It’s in my air pipe!
Stacey: The oolong tea did something to this one.
Brooke: Like what?
Stacey: It made it taste good.
Brooke: Ah.
Stacey: None of the tart flavours come through in this, the base is stronger and keeps them at bay.
Brooke: The spices are the strongest part of this tea, like clove and ginger- yum!.
André: I find it almost medicinal, it has that slight taste of cough syrup.
Brooke: In a good way?
André: Yeah… Yeah in a good way!
Brooke: It kind of reminds me of Cold 9-11, or the Sore Throat tea. Maybe because of the ginger.
Stacey: I taste the orange peel- so nice!
André: The ginger is a great compliment to the fruit, that’s for sure.  It’s very nice and delicate, I like that it was cool so I could drink it right away.(Steeping it at 85 degrees is important!)

Our discussion veered off and we began discussing mail and packages and the vastness of Canada and the USA, but we did have a few final thoughts to say on this one:

Final thoughts:

Stacey: I like this tea! The ingredients all work well together to create a nice flavor. The cinnamon, orange peel, cloves and ginger really come together nicely. I can get mulled wine when I taste it. Reminds me of when my friend Kara brought a mulled wine kit to a pot lock and the wine was warming on the stove. Yum!

André: I like how light and delicate this tea is, I like it surprisingly a lot for a fruity tea but it’s because the fruit flavours aren’t overly strong. No one ingredient comes to the foreground for too long, nothing is overpowering in this one. All around it’s a very nice tea.

Brooke: I was happily wrong about this tea when I first made judgements. I’m still amazed when the smell is so different than the taste. This one is nice and spicy but not in the way that The Spice is Right was. DAVIDsTEA did really well with this one, and I’ll happily have another cup as we devour our gingerbread house today.

Drink up!

Day 15: Honey, I Dew

Happy December 15th everyone!

As seems to be a trend this year, our schedules and the time change only allowed me and Brooke to sip our teas together for about 10 minutes. At least we can fit in a few minutes, right? Onward!

Tea: Honey, I Dew

Description: In Vietnam, melons are a sign of good luck. In Chinese medicine, they’re said to help cool the body down. Around here, we think they’re just about the tastiest fruit around – especially when you pair them with fresh, delicate white tea. With fruity hints of pineapple and mango, this melon-packed blend is refreshing, juicy and naturally sweet. The best part? This tea was named by our customers! Is there anything they can’t dew?

Ingredients: Apple, white tea, pineapple, (pineapple, sugar), melon (melon, sucrose, calcium chloride, citric acid, natural melon flavouring), mango (mango, sugar), rose petals, natural watermelon flavouring)

Stacey: I have so many little bitties in my tea. I would show you but I think I would spill tea on my keyboard.
Brooke: Well that certainly wouldn’t be very good. Keep it safe!

*sip*

Brooke: This tea would be SO nice in the summer as an ice tea! It has all the things you would want in an iced-tea, so much so that you wouldn’t even need to put a sweetener it like agave syrup.
Stacey: Agreed, but because it’s a white tea I don’t mind that it’s warm. It has the flavour of sweetness, without being too sweet…if that makes sense.
Brooke: I feel very weird drinking something so fruity at 8 in the morning.
Stacey: I feel less odd because it’s 11 am here.
Brooke: I think DavidsTea did a good job capturing the flavour of honeydew melon. I absolutely taste that.
Stacey: Agreed, I think this is a rare tea where you taste exactly what you smell. Also there’s apple in here.
Brooke: Right, it is the first ingredient. Dang.

Brooke had to head to another Let’s Talk Science event, so we continued our review via text: 

Stacey: I like this tea, but I’m not blown away.
Brooke: I am drinking it now, it’s at room temperature and wow! So much nicer. I would drink this all the time!
Stacey: I’d say it would be an “every now and then” tea.
Brooke: Mmm, Stacey! It’s like calorie-free juice. Still tea-y but fun!
Stacey: Actually, it isn’t calorie free. The website says there are 10 calories per cup.
Brooke: Ack! My blood sugar!

My Mom also had a few thoughts for today’s tea:

Lorie: This tea would be great iced, it tastes exactly like melon. It makes me think of summer and eating melon in my backyard.

Final Thoughts

Stacey: This tea didn’t necessarily ‘wow’ me, but it did have a lot of good flavours. I think I would have to try this one cold to give it a full review, but if you like honey dew this one’s for you!

Brooke: I say have this brew cold, or not at all. It was a very strange feeling to have such a sweet and fruity drink so early in the morning and so darn hot, but when it cooled down- voila! Its existence made sense. 🙂

Day 14: Alpine Punch

Tea enthusiasts, hello!

It’s a sunny day in Victoria (a rare occurrence during winter months) and we’ve just had a lovely egg and toast breakfast, courtesy of Dr. Dré. While Stacey is busy today with meetings and anniversaries (congrats, you two!), André and I graciously took on the responsibilities of today’s tea: Alpine Punch. Come along and enjoy this favourite with us!

Tea: Alpine Punch

Description: This is the kind of tea we imagine they serve in fabulous ski chalets in the Swiss Alps. With apple, cinnamon, ginger and the heady scent of almonds, it’s warm, comforting and totally decadent. What better to sip after a long day of skiing, sledding and snowball fights? Just cozy up in front of the fire and warm up with this sweet, fortifying brew. And if a little splash of brandy makes it in there too, all the better.

Ingredients: Rooibos, coconut chips, coconut rasps, apple, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, black pepper, rose blossoms, almonds, natural and artificial almond cream flavouring.

Brooke: They suggest putting brandy in this! Who owns brandy these days?
André: Brandy? Like the alcohol?
Brooke: Yes! Did you know that brandy is distilled wine?
André: I did. I took a wine class in college, way back in the day.
Brooke: Well then!
André: As for brandy, it’s not something I drink on a regular basis.
Brooke: Ah, but Alpine Punch IS! Why, you just had this last night when we went to climb!
André: You bet, I can’t get enough. As I said a few days ago, this is one of my top 5 favourites.
Brooke: Agreed. Something about almond, apple, and ginger that just fits.

*sip*

André: Mmm. I think half of what I love about it is the smell. I totally feel the Swiss chalet getting ready for a summit bid.
Brooke: A what?
André: A summit bid. A mountain climbing attempt.
Brooke: Oh.
André: It’s odd to drink this tea while it’s still so warm out (3°C). I always associate this tea with really cold weather. The hot tea in your mouth paired with the cold snowflakes on your lips.
Brooke: I imagine myself back in Ottawa in the heart of winter, my eyelashes freezing together and wind sneaking its way into my sleeves as I walk to campus. One sip of this in my thermos and all would be well again. What flavours really come out for you?
André: I taste the almond and rose each time. The rooibos bark is well chosen for this tea, it compliments the other flavours very well to deliver a well balanced brew.
Brooke: There’s a really good mix of spices, fruits and nuts and yet it still manages to be delicate and not overpowering. Forever Nuts is fruitier and sweeter, while this one is more of a complex mix of sweet and spice. Mmm Mmm, this one will never get old.

Final thoughts:

Brooke: There has been, and always will be, a tin of this in our cupboard. A perfect winter tea that warms you up, keeps your day sweet, and delivers a pleasant burst of almond and ginger.
André: A five star tea in my books. Alpine Punch is my go-to winter tea. Can we have another cup?

Day 2: Mango Madness

Hey tea drinkers!

Stacey here to bring you on day #2 of our 24 day tea journey! Today Brooke and I were able to Skype over my lunch break allowing Brooke to wake up at more decent hour.  And with Ottawa being pretty dreary and Victoria being its rainy self, today’s tea was the perfect fit to add a little sunshine to our day.

Tea: Mango Madness

Mango Madness

Description: One sip of this tea and you’ll do anything to get your hands on more. In fact, we’re a bit worried about letting people get a taste. There might be riots. Looting. Traffic jams. It’s a lot of responsibility! But who can blame you for going crazy over this delicious white tea? It’s fruity. It’s refreshing. It tastes just like a ripe piece of mango. In short, it’s total madness.

Ingredients: Apple, white tea, candied pineapple (pineapple, cane sugar, citric acid, sulphur dioxide), orange pieces and peel, safflowers, strawberries, calendula petals, mango (mango, sugar, citric acid, sulphur dioxide), stevia extract and natural mango flavouring.

Brooke: Does this tea have apple in it? (Looks back to find our previous post from 2013) Ah yes, I only had a sip of this last time because I worried about my apple allergy.
Stacey: Do you want to risk it this year?
Brooke: Yeah, let’s do it! André is here if I need to go to the hospital.
Stacey: Can you drink it yet or is it too hot?
Brooke: I think we can drink it, here we go!

*sip*

Brooke: ARGH my throat!!… Oh actually , it’s quite smooth!
Stacey: Mmm, I think it has a lot of flavour but it is also very soft and delicate.
Brooke: This tea would make a good iced tea, but not in the same way sleigh ride would because this one is delicious and sleigh ride was not!
André: I agree. I think white teas make great iced teas, especially with coconut. This one tastes like coconut.
Stacey: It tastes very tropical. When I was talking to my Mom earlier it made her think of relaxing on an island.
Brooke: I love that your mom is playing along with us, too! Tropical may be too strong of a word, but it does calm me down and soothe me.
André: Hmm…You do taste the mango but it’s not overpowering. Very mellow.
Stacey: Do you taste a sweetness at the end of this?
Brooke: I wouldn’t have overtly noticed it, no.
Stacey: I didn’t either until the last sip….just as I suspected- they put stevia in it!
Brooke: It wasn’t in the old version of mango madness, I wonder why DavidsTea added it?
André: Now that you mention it, I do notice it is sweeter than it should be.
Stacey: Oh no, now all I taste it the stevia. It might be because my tea is cooler now, it wasn’t as obvious when it was warmer.
Brooke: Well, at least my throat hasn’t closed up!

 

Final thoughts:

Brooke: I really like how soft of a this tea is. It’s not harsh or too sweet, just a delicate reminder of the warmer days that once were.
Stacey: Aren’t you still having warmer days in Victoria?
Brooke: Well certainly warmer than Ottawa but unfortunately we’re not tropical here.
Stacey: Mango Madness doesn’t really make me think of December but it does make me think of the tropics. Good choice for the second day of December with all this wet weather.
Brooke: It’s like DavidsTea knew it would be raining!

Day 1: Sleigh Ride

Happy December 1st, tea lovers!

That’s right, the roomies are back with another round of DavidsTea’s #24DaysofTea and we are SO excited! Are you?! Sure, maybe we’re on the opposite sides of the country now, but we still love each other and tea just as much and we are making it work. Starting with me getting up at 6:45am in order to be able to message with Stacey and skype with my Mom before heading off to campus. The things we do for tea! Door #1: *Gasp* SLEIGH RIDE! Giddyup!

Tea: Sleigh Ride

DAVIDsTEA Description: Falling snow, popping chestnuts, cold hands and noses…yep, winter has arrived. But don’t worry, we have the perfect tea to warm you up all December long. Cinnamon, apples, raisins, almonds, and hibiscus combine for a tea that is sweet, tart, and earthy. And beet pieces make it as nice and rosy as a caroler’s cheeks. So hop in your sleigh, snuggle up, and pass a thermos around. It’s lovely weather for a Sleigh Ride together.

Ingredients: Apple, hibiscus blossoms, pineapple (pineapple, sugar), papaya (papaya, sugar), beetroot, cinnamon, raisins, coconut, roasted almonds (almonds, sugar, glucose syrup, vegetable fat, caramelized sugar syrup), popped rice, natural and artificial flavouring.

Brooke: Mom, are you excited?!
Cathy: Oh no, this is the one you really don’t care for! What don’t you like about it? It’s all very cinnamon-y and good! Apple slices!
Brooke: Hmm… It’s too sour for my taste, but we’ll see what we think of it this time!

We’ve had this tea each year of  DAVIDsTEA’s 24 Days of Tea set (see 2012, 2013, and 2014) … and we’ve never liked it. What would happen this time?!

Stacey, via Google hangouts: I was so disappointed with finding out it was sleigh ride! My Mom and I are both hoping our taste buds have changed.
(Stacey’s mom was texting her: “The aroma smells like cinnamon and peppermint”)

*Sip*

Cathy: Hmm, it’s too insipid [adj. “lacking flavor”]. There’s no oomph! Brooke, how do you hip hop dance?
Brooke: W-what?

Stacey: Whoa, whoa, WAIT! Guys, when it’s lukewarm… it’s so much better! WOW! For once I am happy for the time difference between us so I could let the tea cool off before starting to drink. It was difficult to wait, but it was well worth it. My mom agrees! Says she’s drinking it cooler, too. Apparently at the beginning it tasted like cough medicine, but as she drank it, it  got her in the mood for decorating!
Brooke: Odd combo, I like it!
Cathy: Hmmm… It makes me think of an apple cider, like a mulled cider thing.
Brooke: I dunno… Still tastes like warm juice to me, ick!

Stacey: But what about the flavours? They are so nice this year!

Brooke: When I start drinking it, it reminds me of Forever Nuts (yay) but then I get this sour and bitter finish (boo).
Cathy: Oh, well I like it.
Stacey: I think that it tastes exactly like warm apple cider. Wait, Brooke, where’s Andre?
Brooke: Probably awake in bed, since I’m being loud and beat boxing with mom.  Hey…wait! The tea is getting better!
Stacey: Told you! Let it cool a bit!
Following our final dissections of the tea itself, we expressed how excited we were for the next 23 days of tea and blogging. While this tea didn’t light us up, it didn’t rile us up either, which was a pleasant surprise. We all agreed that this tea should be had at a cooler temperature rather than piping hot. This seemed to help with the bitterness and sourness that it sometimes tasted. And, hey! With that, we completed day one! HOW EXCITING!

Day 22: Sleigh Ride

Hello Readers!

We were a bit disappointed to discover what tea was behind door # 22, because it’s a tea that we’ve had twice before (here and here) and is one that we don’t particularly like very much (sorry!). And don’t get us wrong, we want to like it (we really do!). In fact, we’ve tried numerous things to make it fit our tastes: not steeping it for long, adding cinnamon sticks, using the dredges of someone else’s brew, eating fruitcake with it, etc. But every time, we end up throwing it down the drain. So this year, we thought it best to not to even try (*spoiler alert*or so we thought…).

Tea: Sleigh Ride

Stacey: Did you see what the tea is today?
Brooke: Yep. No way!
Stacey: Agreed!

*A little later that morning, Stacey receives a surprising text from Brooke.*

Brooke: Hold the phone! Game-changer…Mom and I made an iced version. Whoa.
Stacey: Ohhhh! Much better???
Brooke: Yes!!

Well this is indeed a game changer! After creating a cooler version, Brooke and her Mom, Cathy sat down to review this brew:

Brooke: It still comes out strong, but it just makes more sense as a cool tea. Even the cinnamon found a place to fit in!
Cathy: Do you get any other flavours from it, now that it’s chilled?
Brooke: It kind of makes me think of a fancy vitamin water.
Cathy: The cinnamon is odd, isn’t it? I continue with my theory that these teas can be better cooled. You can still steep it hot, of course! Can you cool teas quickly?
Brooke: The pouring the water into another cup method!
Cathy: I often feel like I want to add sugar to my teas but I find the sweetness comes out when it’s cooler. All teas are better this way!
Brooke: At least herbals are, they’re just fruits and flowers after all! This poor tea deserves better!

Day 21: Lime Gelato

Hello tea lovers!

Brooke is heading home to Halifax today so I am all by my lonesome for today’s tea (hopefully I can make it interesting for you!) So without further adieu let’s get to it!

Tea: Lime Gelato

Description: Remember the summer you spent in Italy? Sipping espresso on the terrace, catching a ride on the back of a stranger’s Vespa, and of course, trying your first taste of tart, creamy lime gelato. With its fresh, fruity aroma and smooth flavour, this deliciously creamy mix of fruit and green tea will bring you right back. Try it iced. On a terrace. While the moon hits your eye.

Ingredients: Apple, Sencha green tea, pineapple, lemongrass, artificial creamy lime yogurt flavouring

Steeping Instructions: 1.25 tsp, 85°C, 3-4 minutes

Stacey: It smells like lime creamisicle.

Stacey: Mmm. I tend to not like lime desserts, but this is really nice! The lime is very subtle. Quite the tasty treat! It’s so odd just thinking to myself. Maybe I should talk out loud?

Stacey: I really this tea! *looks around at empty apartment.*

*text received from MK*

MK: Brooke wants me to text you in depth about the tea. So I woke up as groggily as humanly possible.
Stacey: Oh thank god! 
MK: Last night I dreamed a favourite band was attacking a tea farm.
Stacey: Oh?
MK: Anyway, I wandered downstairs and found that no one was home. Feeling slightly abandoned, I opened the window and saw that it was Lime Gelato. I struggled to get it open but when I finally did I thought, “oh no, lemongrass”. But I smelled it and was quite impressed. I also tried to pour the water into one cup and then into another but the first cup had floaties (I then cursed the person who didn’t clean the cup).  It better be good after this struggle.
Stacey: I think you’ll like it!

*sip*

MK: Hmm, I think it lives up to its name. My brother said it smells like lime pudding (does such a thing exist?). First bit of the sip is creamy, but then the lime hits the back of your tongue. I don’t know if I would drink it everyday but I like it.
Stacey: Agreed! I was pleasantly surprised by the mix of flavours, there’s apple and pineapple in there!
MK: Oh, apple?! I would never have known! They seem to throw that into everything…makes me suspicious because sometimes you can really taste it and other times you can’t. So what exactly do they do to these apples, why the difference?
Stacey: Yeah, DAVIDsTEA is quite sneaky…
MK: I think I’m impressed when a tea is creamy without the cream.
Stacey: Yeah…I wonder how they do it…
MK: Me too. Secretssss! However, I doubt I’m going to be mixing my own tea concoctions any time soon, so DAVIDsTEA can keep their secrets. Although, I wonder how someone even gets on that career path…

While MK and I were wondering about DAVIDsTEA’s secrets, Brooke was able to sit down with family Halifax to review the tea:

Brooke: What does it smell like Mom?
Cathy: Well, I wouldn’t say I smell lime if I didn’t know that’s what was in it! Did I tell you that I like my teas cooler? I don’t like them hot at all, I can suck it right back when it’s cooler. Don’t say suck!
Brooke: Dad, do you want to try?
Stewart: No, no, I’ll pass.
Cathy: Oh! But you like main squeeze and this is citrusy! And it only steeped for 4 minutes!
Stewart: Alright, okay. Oh, that’s pleasant and refreshing! I like the tanic tang of a black tea so I’m not being drawn to this one though.
Brooke: You guys are talking too fast!

Stacey: This is quite a tasty treat. I am pleasantly surprised the line was lovely and saddle. And yeah really free but also works as a heart. To you I was really would be bad. Yeah everything electrical.

Well folks, although I thought I would be all on my own today, turns out lime gelato really brings people together. What did you all think?

Day 14: Sugar Plum Forest

Hello Readers!

Happy Sunday! Today we were in the Christmas spirit and decorated sugar cookies with our friends Desirée and Jason and went to Brooke’s Aunt Tracey’s house for a lovely dinner. With all of this excitement, we know we are a little late in our post, but we had a nice morning and are sharing it now. Enjoy!

Brooke: Ooooh! Sugar Plum Forest!
Stacey: Oh good, I need some liquid.
Brooke: Um?
Stacey: I mean I need to be hydrated before yoga!
Brooke: Right.

Tea: Sugar Plum Forest

 

Description: Whether you’re out sledding or just doing some holiday shopping, there’s no better way to stay warm and cozy than a piping hot mug of tea. And this tartly fruity, lightly spiced blend is the perfect winter companion. Just one sip and you’ll have visions of sugar plums dancing in your head. Not to mention apple, hibiscus, ginger and warm winter spices. It’s the perfect shot of warmth on a chilly winter day.

Ingredients: Apple, hibiscus, rooibos, ginger, licorice root, raisins, cinnamon, rose hip peel, plum, cardamom, star anise, bruised pepper, cloves, chili pieces, artificial flavouring.

Steeping Instructions: 1.25 tsp, 96 °C, 4-7 minutes

Brooke: Pink tea #4! I’m getting initial hints of the cloves upon first sniff.
Stacey: Oh yeah, agreed.
André: I want to sip it but I think I’ll taste hot again.

*sip*

Stacey makes a face.
Brooke: I wish I could take a picture of your face and have that as how you describe it. It’s beautiful.
André: I can’t describe this one. It’s like another one I’ve had but I can’t place it. Forever nuts, maybe? Roughly the same weight but the difference is Forever Nuts is like, “hey, I’m a toasty cake.”
Brooke: Wow, it tastes nothing like it smells! It smells like cinnamon hearts but tastes…oh. There’s so much fruit in there… but it doesn’t taste sweet. It tastes like olives again!
Stacey: What? No, I think it’s a bit tart.
Brooke: It’s weird, I don’t hate it but I would never have it again.
Stacey: I think there’s too many things going on.
Brooke: It’s almost like a subtle soup broth, you could put some carrots in there and eat it. How.. strange.
Stacey:  Yeah, there are too many flavours that didn’t mesh well and it was overwhelming. They should be complimentary but this was too much!

Tea vibes:

As we like to do, we spoke our final thoughts on the tea at Stacey’s phone, which thought we were saying this:

André: Affinity is very late and free. Yeah, it’s  a tasty river dance.  More fruit and veg. 4 of 10.

Brooke: I don’t like this T. I don’t like its levers. I don’t like the density. Big foot artificial flavours are ever ok, diner. Fun have a 10.

Stacey: I wish I like this T. It has its name, um, but it’s better than others we had so as I am 5 on time hello.

We seem to be getting angry about all these flavours being mixed together without our consent! Maybe we’re getting to be grumpy tea connoisseurs who need a bit more simplicity in our brews. Who knows? What do you think about all these extra and artificial flavours? Yay or nay? We didn’t feel like dancing to this one!

Maybe tomorrow will be different?

Day 10: Bubbie’s Baklava

Hello Tea Drinkers!

This morning Brooke overslept but hurried into the kitchen after hearing the calling of the kettle then immediately punched open door #10, much to Stacey’s alarm.

Stacey: AhhhooooOo!!
Brooke: Yay!! This is one I was really looking forward to.
Stacey: I’m so excited!
Brooke: Wow, there’s a lot of fruit in this little tin. A pineapple, papaya, some apple… I can hardly fit it into a teaspoon!
Stacey: Yeah, reading these ingredients it looks like this tea is jam-packed full of tastes. I’ll get the mugs!

Tea: Bubbie’s Baklava


Description: Just about every grandma has a secret recipe for special occasions. For David’s Bubbie, it’s baklava – studded with walnuts, almonds and pistachios and scented with honey and rose. And no family get-together is complete without it. This honey-scented oolong is an homage to that deliciously nutty treat. With candied fruit, nuts and spices, it’s rich enough to make any occasion feel special.

Ingredients: Oolong tea, roasted chicory root, pineapple, papaya, cinnamon, walnuts, apple, ginger, roasted almonds, cardamom, rose pepper, pistachios, rose blossom, artificial flavouring.

Steeping Instructions: 1.25 tsp, 85°C, 4-7 minutes

Stacey: It definitely smells good.
Brooke: Smells spicy, like something we’ve already had, you know? It doesn’t smell as unique as its description paints it…

*sip*

Brooke: Oh, but THAT is a new flavour. It doesn’t taste like anything I’ve ever had. Yummy!
Stacey: It tastes like baklava to me! It’s like a liquid dessert!
Brooke: Never had this combination of flavours before, wow!
Stacey: Weirdly, I think I taste the pineapple… and I think it works.
Brooke: Ah, you get where they’re going with their strange flavour additions, do you? We’re growing up!
Stacey: Yum, I’m glad we have a bit left!
Brooke: I wish I had a bubbie who would make me baklava. I can just imagine a sweet little lady making desserts for her big Hanukkah family get together. This is a really special tea- I love it!

Unfortunately time was against our two roomies today and they both had to leave for work before finishing off their brews. Rest assured though, this is definitely a tea for the cupboards, with its rich nutty and fruit blend of flavours, it satisfies the taste buds and the heart!

Once again we played with Stacey’s voice-type feature on her phone and here’s what we got:

Stacey: This is such a rush of flavours! You can get there pineapple, the apple, the cinema, mccrimmon; its all real time together. That you remind me so much about a while ago, I feel like I’m taking a bike as a drink 9 and 10.

Brooke:  Totally trade direct. Sometimes weird, but this time is it in the ghetto hand. It brought us um. But it back of that, I am glad we had a couple left in there. It’s mine!

Well folks, that brings us to the end of Day 10! Phew! December is just flying by! We’ll see you again tomorrow (which we are secretly hoping is a snow day).
