Day 24: Santa’s Secret

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVE!

Well folks- we made it. For the fourth time, we made it through all 24 days of tea. Now, since we already talked about this three times already (2012, 2013, 2014) we’re not doing it again! Instead, we’re going to talk about our opinions of this year’s #24daysoftea!! Since it’s our fourth in a row, we figured we can discuss how this one compares to those of the past. So, without further ado, here is the information for secret santa, which we then promptly ignore!

Description: Ever wonder how Santa manages to deliver all those presents in just one night? Well here’s the hush-hush formula. Ingredients: Black tea, peppermint, sprinkles (sugar, rice flour, partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, corn starch, natural and artificial flavours, cellulose gum, red 40 Lake, mono and diglycerides, carrageenan, titanium dioxide (colour), polysorbate 60)

Brooke: So, what did you think of this year’s “24 days of tea”?
Stacey: I’m quite impressed with the variety of teas this year. Many of these ones were brand new for us.
Brooke: Yeah, and even the teas that we had before have changed in their ingredients. Mom, for example, didn’t like the Gingerbread tea last year but this year she raved about it!
Stacey: Yeah, they added chocolate chips I think, which made it nice and  creamy!
Brooke: Exactly- they improved the ones we didn’t enjoy and I was impressed.
Stacey: Yeah generally speaking, the ones that we had had years before were also ones that we liked. And they had a few we didn’t enjoy, like Sleigh Ride, out of the way pretty quickly.
Eric: Did you talk about how cool Snow Day was?
Stacey: The snowflakes went up and down like it was snowing in the cup!
Brooke: Neat! But I gotta say, I mourned Glitter and Gold’s shimmer this year.
André: They’re going to have to re-name it. Gold, No Glitter. Gold Sans Glitter. Just Gold Tea.
Brooke: I’ve also gotta say, I was very unimpressed with the amount of tea in each tin this year. Years past our tins were filled to the brim but this year they were barely two thirds full. We paid more for the calendar this year ($40) but we got way less tea in our tins.
Stacey: Well, they were GOLD tins, Brooke!
Eric: I heard that they had someone testing to make sure each tea tin was twistable.
Stacey: Maybe they were taking tea from yours, Brooke!
Eric: Skimming 25% off the top!
André: Tea heist!
Brooke: Those scoundrels!
Stacey: You know what I liked? The drawers instead of doors. Hey, that kind of rhymed! Quit playing with the bells on my hat!
Eric: I can’t help it!
Brooke: I also LOVED the drawers. Clean, simple, so reusable.
Stacey: Yeah, and I liked how you could turn the drawers around to see what each tea was after, so you don’t have to go searching for the tins when you wanted a specific kind after the calendar was over. For example, we’re going to have Cardamom French Toast tomorrow, I think. Mmm! Wait, what if we have French toast for breakfast? Is that too much?
André: Never too much French toast.

Final thoughts: Are we doing this again next year?

Brooke: I’m feeling like I don’t want to do this next year because of the cost and the difficulty of trying to Skype with the ridiculous time difference and schedule conflicts.
Stacey: I want this advent calendar again, I think. I really liked it. But boy, the time change made this really hard to do. Every day, it was tough.
Eric: What if next year you just did highlights on the weekend? Once a week!
Stacey: And we can always text about it…
Brooke: Maybe this blog is finally ready for a rest.
Stacey; Well… I’m not done with #24daysoftea just yet.
Brooke:Oh, alright!

Day 21: Cardamom French Toast

Hi Tea Drinkers,

Happy Monday! Today Brooke and I were able to skype for a few minutes before I had to go back to work and she had to get ready for a trip to the dentist. We probably could have just talked about the smell of this tea, my goodness! Does it ever smell good! We decided to steep it though and give it the ol’ taste test. Here we go!

Tea: Cardamom French Toast

Description: Something about cardamom just puts us in a festive frame of mind. We love its rich, fragrant taste any way we can get it. One of our faves? The buttery, cardamom-scented Christmas breads popular in Sweden and Finland. And cardamom toast is great, it only stands to reason that cardamom French toast would be out of this world. With black tea, cardamom, cane sugar and cinnamon, this rich, sweet blend tastes just like the decadent breakfast of our dreams. Only this is one brunch item you’ll be wanting all day long.

Ingredients: Black tea, cinnamon, lemon peel, coriander seeds, cardamom, coconut sugar, cane sugar, natural and artificial flavouring.

Stacey: This tea smells amazing!
Brooke: Yeah, it does. It’s all caramel-ly smelling.
Stacey: Caramel?
Brooke: Yeah, almost like a butter smell.
Stacey: Maybe that’s the cane sugar, that’s melted?

*sip*

Brooke: Is there vanilla in here?
Stacey: Nope, no vanilla.
Brooke: Mmm, this is such a Christmas tea. It might even be our Christmas morning tea! I love it!
Stacey: Yeah and it’s not sweet at all, which I love!
Brooke: I would say it’s sweet, but not the fruit sweet we usually taste. The only sweetness is the butter-yness I described.
Stacey: I’m just glad I can drink it, usually if they add sugar I don’t want it.
Brooke: I like that they put sugar in it and not Stevia.
Stacey: Yep, Only coconut sugar and cane sugar in here.
Brooke: Give it to me!
Stacey: It does taste a lot like french toast.
Brooke: Makes me not want to have french toast because I feel like I am already having it.
Stacey: This is seriously very delicious.
Brooke: Uh oh, I am starting to taste a bit too much sugar now.
Stacey: Oh not me, are you further down the cup.
Brooke: Yeah, maybe halfway through.
Stacey: Nope, no sugar for me. Mmm.

Final Thoughts: 

Stacey: I left the drippings out on my desk for the rest of the day and I am so glad I did…it made my office smell delicious! And it tasted just as good! As my Mom said, this is one for the cupboards!

Unfortunately Brooke had to go for a root canal today so she wasn’t able to share her final thoughts. Remember how I said to wish her a happy birthday yesterday? Well today, you should send her some love for her sore tooth. I know she would appreciate it.

Another one for the books! Wish we could have ended it on a happier note, but there’s nothing happy about a root canal. 😦

Day 19: Dark Chocolate Delight

Hi steepers!

Day 19 brought friends and dental work- what a day! While Stacey and Eric had our friends Des, Kathryn, and Steve over, I had just gotten back from a poke and a prod from my dentist when we settled down to discuss today’s tea. Lots of catching up, chatting, and tangents occurred, but we did talk tea enough for a blog post. Here we go!

Tea: Dark Chocolate Delight

Description: What is it about dark chocolate? Its taste is sinfully decadent, but studies say it might actually be good for you. But wait – it gets better. Now you don’t even have to wait until dessert to get your fix. With this black tea blend, you can treat yourself anytime, anywhere. Ingredients: Black tea, spiced dark chocolate (cocoa beans, sugar, cocoa butter, ancho chili, nutmeg, cinnamon, salt, allspice, clove, chipotle chili, ground vanilla), blueberries, cocoa shells, natural chocolate flavouring.

Kathryn: It smells like mild chocolate.
Steve: How can it be mild? It either is chocolate or it isn’t!
Brooke: Well, some advent calendars have “chocolate-y treats” in them that aren’t even real chocolate, maybe it smells like that? Either way, it smells delicious and I’m excited.

*Sip*

Brooke: Hm. Chocolate water!
Stacey: It’s supposed to have spice in it. Peppers and stuff…
Desiree: I think there is supposed to be cumin in it.
Brooke: I just steeped mine for 5 mins, but maybe it should have been there longer? I don’t taste any spices.
Stacey: I thought we’d be able taste some sort of spice.
Brooke: Didn’t we have chocolate chili chai once before? Did you know, root canals are expensive?!

A tangent ensues- then we’re back on track.

Stacey: Hm, we only had a few teaspoons for the whole pot I made, I think ours might have been too weak, too.
Brooke: Yeah we need to steep it with more tea and for longer, I say. There are flavors in there that I want to taste!
Desiree: Yep, nothing too special about this one. I can taste the spice a little bit, though. I can tell there is something there but I want more.
Stacey: Yeah, I don’t really taste cloves, cinnamon or any spice.
Kathryn: Yeah, it’s is *okay*
Brooke: Aw man, you’re going to Upper Canada Village- so envious!

Second tangent on time difference, friends, and co-ordinating tea reviews, before final thoughts occurred.

Final thoughts:

Everyone agreed that while this tea had a neat chocolate flavour to it, we all were left wanting more spice. Our next cups of this will be steeped longer and with more loose leaf in hopes of hitting the spot.

Day 14: Alpine Punch

Tea enthusiasts, hello!

It’s a sunny day in Victoria (a rare occurrence during winter months) and we’ve just had a lovely egg and toast breakfast, courtesy of Dr. Dré. While Stacey is busy today with meetings and anniversaries (congrats, you two!), André and I graciously took on the responsibilities of today’s tea: Alpine Punch. Come along and enjoy this favourite with us!

Tea: Alpine Punch

Description: This is the kind of tea we imagine they serve in fabulous ski chalets in the Swiss Alps. With apple, cinnamon, ginger and the heady scent of almonds, it’s warm, comforting and totally decadent. What better to sip after a long day of skiing, sledding and snowball fights? Just cozy up in front of the fire and warm up with this sweet, fortifying brew. And if a little splash of brandy makes it in there too, all the better.

Ingredients: Rooibos, coconut chips, coconut rasps, apple, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, black pepper, rose blossoms, almonds, natural and artificial almond cream flavouring.

Brooke: They suggest putting brandy in this! Who owns brandy these days?
André: Brandy? Like the alcohol?
Brooke: Yes! Did you know that brandy is distilled wine?
André: I did. I took a wine class in college, way back in the day.
Brooke: Well then!
André: As for brandy, it’s not something I drink on a regular basis.
Brooke: Ah, but Alpine Punch IS! Why, you just had this last night when we went to climb!
André: You bet, I can’t get enough. As I said a few days ago, this is one of my top 5 favourites.
Brooke: Agreed. Something about almond, apple, and ginger that just fits.

*sip*

André: Mmm. I think half of what I love about it is the smell. I totally feel the Swiss chalet getting ready for a summit bid.
Brooke: A what?
André: A summit bid. A mountain climbing attempt.
Brooke: Oh.
André: It’s odd to drink this tea while it’s still so warm out (3°C). I always associate this tea with really cold weather. The hot tea in your mouth paired with the cold snowflakes on your lips.
Brooke: I imagine myself back in Ottawa in the heart of winter, my eyelashes freezing together and wind sneaking its way into my sleeves as I walk to campus. One sip of this in my thermos and all would be well again. What flavours really come out for you?
André: I taste the almond and rose each time. The rooibos bark is well chosen for this tea, it compliments the other flavours very well to deliver a well balanced brew.
Brooke: There’s a really good mix of spices, fruits and nuts and yet it still manages to be delicate and not overpowering. Forever Nuts is fruitier and sweeter, while this one is more of a complex mix of sweet and spice. Mmm Mmm, this one will never get old.

Final thoughts:

Brooke: There has been, and always will be, a tin of this in our cupboard. A perfect winter tea that warms you up, keeps your day sweet, and delivers a pleasant burst of almond and ginger.
André: A five star tea in my books. Alpine Punch is my go-to winter tea. Can we have another cup?

Day 11: Hot Chocolate

Hello friends!

Brooke is off at a full-day conference today, so it will be just me reviewing the tea. Who knew time change would be so difficult for two roomies who want to enjoy a cup of tea together? In any case, I’ll try to bring some excitement by adding thoughts from my co-worker Poppy, and Eric to round out the post. Let’s see how hot chocolate tastes in tea form!

Tea: Hot Chocolate

Hot Chocolate

Description: We take hot chocolate pretty seriously around here. It’s gotta be rich, decadent and mega-creamy. And after searching high and low for the ultimate hot chocolate tea, we finally found the perfect blend. We took a flavourful base of pu’erh and black tea, then we added real cocoa nibs and fudgy chocolate chips. The result? An uber-chocolately blend worthy of the name Hot Chocolate. Dark, sweet and totally satisfying, it’s the perfect winter treat.

Ingredients: Pu’erh tea, black tea, cocoa nibs, chocolate chips (sugar, chocolate liquor, cocoa butter, soy lecithin, vanilla), chocolate curls (sugar, cocoa butter, whole milk powder, chocolate liquor, whey powder, lactose, soy lecithin, vanilla), stevia extract

Since Brooke wasn’t able to have the tea with me today, that meant that I was able to have it right in the morning. It was quite the change!

Stacey: Well this is definitely a pur’eh.
Poppy: It’s kind of got a smokey taste to it.
Stacey: Yeah, not as sweet as I was expecting.
Poppy: I don’t hate it but I don’t know if I love it. It kind of tastes like watered down hot chocolate.
Stacey: Almost tastes like one of those chocolate calcium chews…not sure if that’s a good thing though. Any final thoughts?
Poppy: I probably wouldn’t buy it myself, but I would drink it if someone offered it to me.
Stacey: And that’s exactly what happened!

Later this morning Eric also provided his two cents: 

Eric: It’s a sweet tea that hit its mark in terms of the flavor. Unfortunately it doesn’t quite live up to what a hot chocolate is, especially like the one we had on the canal. I’m sure a foamy late version of it would make it much more enjoyable.
Stacey: Agreed, earlier Poppy and I were saying it was almost like a watered down hot chocolate. I almost prefer this though, mostly because hot chocolate is often too sweet for me.
Eric: Good point, I almost never drink hot chocolate because the sweetness is overpowering. So the watered down might not be a failure but rather a way to make it more enjoyable for us.
Stacey: I would be interested to try this is in a latte format though.

Final Thoughts: 

Stacey: As usually, as the tea cooled down the more flavour notes were present. This tea has a nice smooth creamy factor to it that bring out different layers of chocolate. I really enjoyed drinking this one but probably wouldn’t make it one of my regulars. Glad I got to try it though with 24 days of tea!

Day 8: Cherry Blossom

Hi readers!

Today we were late getting started and barely had time to chat about our brews but wow, this one was worth the wait. What a splendid mix of flavours and lovely aroma for today’s busy schedules. I hope tomorrow is actually today again so we can have more (a la Ground Hog Day). Oops, on to the blog!

Tea: Cherry Blossom

Description: When it comes to making a romantic statement, this alluring white tea simply can’t be beat. For starters, it’s packed with big, juicy cherries, said by some to be an aphrodisiac. Hey, it can’t hurt. Plus it’s strewn with pretty pink rose blossoms – a sure-fire sign of love, friendship and affection. But the real key to their heart? Its delicately bright and fruity taste. Just one sip and they’ll be saying “I do!”

Ingredients: White tea, green tea, cherries, coconut chips, rosebuds, natural and artificial cherry flavouring

Brooke: My mom quite liked this one, she said it has “a sweet” and she “likes the sweet”. The giant rosehip in the loose leaf worried her but she loved the  cherry taste that gives it its name.
Stacey: My mom said that the smell of cherry blossoms filled the house this morning. She said it reminded her of those cherry chocolates with cream in the middle and it brought her back to her childhood. 🙂
Brooke: We seriously are out of a job when our friends and family review these teas better than we do. How adorable! Let’s drink!

Brooke:  Mmmm! Rosey. I never thought I wanted something to taste like a rose, but this is lovely!

Stacey:  Mhmm, very nice indeed. I don’t even mind that it’s not hot anymore. Actually, again, I think it would take away from the flavour if it was.
Brooke:It’s not nearly as sweet as Sleigh Ride or Mango Madness, it’s less harsh. It reminds me of the jasmine/lavender ones we’ve had before- makes me think I’m in a garden full of flowers!
 Stacey: Mhmm and the white tea makes it so delicate.
 Brooke: Yes- it’s cozy. It reminds me of a tea party/art show that I went to with my friend Hayley and our moms years and years ago. An artist invited guests and customers to her home for a gorgeous tea party as a showing of her works. It was all very special, and this tea would fit in so nicely at that party!
 Stacey: That sounds so sophisticated! I feel like I would want to drink this at a tea party that was outside where everyone is wearing big hats.
 Brooke: Sophisticated big hats? Or Dr. Seuss Cat in the Hat hats?
 Stacey: Like at a party for the Queen! Queen hats!
 Brooke: Absolutely.

Day 6: Glitter and Gold

Hello tea lovers!

Stacey here to bring you day 6 of the 24 days of tea. Today’s tea is one that Brooke and I enjoyed before exactly 3 years ago when, if you remember, Brooke’s toe had an unfortunate accident with our apartment wall. This year thankfully Brooke’s toe went unscathed but there has been a change to the ingredients list. Let’s see if this brew will still have our toes a-tingling!

Tea: Glitter and Gold

Glitter & Gold

Description: Looking for a little star power? This sweet, spiced black tea is filled with pretty little gold star-shaped sprinkles. Take a sip and the slow suggestion of cinnamon will warm your body. Your toes will tingle and your mind will turn to fireworks, falling stars, late-night seduction. It’s basically magic.

Ingredients: Chinese black tea, lemon peel, sugar sprinkles (sugar, rice flour, partly hydrogenated canola oil , shellac, titanium oxide, iron oxide, potato starch), sugar, cloves, natural and artificial flavouring.

Stacey: Okay, so, my parents say the cinnamon is strong with this one, and they kind of think it reminds them of chai. What do we think?
Brooke: The tea isn’t glittering and my heart is broken! What…what happened? There aren’t any glimmering sugar crystals in this one like there were before. The glitter stars have no shimmering effect!

(Brooke: People, this is big. Glitter and Gold was gorgeous- it made your tea look like liquid gold, but this just looks like a regular black tea- I am so sad). 

Stacey: I’m Googling it, apparently there’s a petition (signed by 48 individuals) to bring back the old Glitter and Gold. Wow, people are angry! (Side note: If you are angry too, you can sign the petition here)

Brooke: Mmmm at least they didn’t change the flavour!
Stacey: Uh oh, I think I might have over steeped mine. It’s a bit too strong right now.
Brooke: Wow, yeah, not me.  The cinnamon’s nice, the cloves are nice, everything about this tea is nice.
Stacey: Actually, no I didn’t over steep at all. This tea is great! Maybe it doesn’t need to glimmer! It still shimmers taste-wise.
Brooke: What a weird thing to say.
Stacey: My brain’s not working properly yet, Brooke.
Brooke: I bet my Dad’s going to like this one.
Stacey: Yeah, it’s sophisticated like him. It’s not a chai, but it’s got a lot of the same flavours.
Brooke: I think so far out of the calendar, this is my favourite taste and smell wise.
Stacey: I did like the smell, too. The cinnamon and cloves were hitting me in the face. But in a nice way, you know?
Brooke: Of course, I do that all the time!

We then took a little break from the tea review to chat about Christmas shopping, stockings, and stocking fillers. (Brooke: It’s Christmas! It’s December! How exciting! I want to sing carols!)

Brooke: Mm, I am really enjoying this tea! The cloves just make me feel so Christmas-y.
Stacey: Eric said it tasted like fruit cake to him, so that makes sense!

Final thoughts:

Stacey: This tea is toasty and has some really nice flavours. I like it, even without the shimmer!
Brooke: Me too. I find this one to bring back some great memories of DAVIDsTEA Christmases of past, and I’m happy they’re including some good ones this year. I think this tin won’t last long!
Stacey: Ours is already gone…

Day 4: Sweet Almond Green

Salut steepers,

Day 4, happy Friday! The rain continues as December trudges on, and we pull open drawer number 4 and find… our first green tea of the month! The leaves smell like play-doh to me… but maybe I’ve been cooped in the basement too long working on unit plans and have gone a bit off. Ah well- Here we go!

Tea: Sweet Almond Green

Description: Our favourite part of the holiday season? The treats, of course. And those little almond-scented cookies have an extra-special place in our hearts. Buttery and sweet, with the nutty crunch of an almond on top, they’re a dangerously delicious part of any festive cookie spread. But with a nutty kiss of almond and an organic base of green tea, this sweet and subtle tea is our guilt-free version of the classic treat. Because indulging yourself should have no strings attached.

Ingredients:  Green tea, almonds, marigold flowers, cornflower petals. With natural almond flavouring.

Stacey: I’ve been dying to drink this tea all morning while you were asleep on the other side of the country, you know. This has been a test of my willpower. The tea calls to me but I’m not supposed to drink it until we Skype. It’s such a tease.
Brooke: I’m sorry!! This smells like play-doh.
Stacey: What the- I smell almond, with a little bit of fruit. Can I have it now?

*sip*

Brooke: Hm.
Stacey: …Fruity Almond- just like it smelled! Yum!
Brooke: Hm. It just… kind of tastes like a green tea to me. I don’t taste much almond at all!
Stacey: I find you get it afterwords. You get the marzipan flavouring as it lingers. My Mom said it tasted like an almond cookie, she and my Dad liked this one!
Brooke: Hmm… not me! It’s like.. green tea play-doh. Andre agrees but also says it tastes a little medicinal.
Stacey: I don’t get that at ALL! What?!
Brooke: I thought there were fruit pieces in this, but it’s just almond! I’m so confused this morning.
Stacey: Oh, let’s do some hypothetical questions. When would you drink this tea?
Brooke: I wouldn’t. I don’t really like it.
Stacey: Well that answers that.
Brooke: What about you?
Stacey: This one would also be a good iced tea, with a bit of honey in it or something. I’d have this with a marzipan croissant.
Brooke: I would LOVE a croissant right now. Like with cream in it.
Stacey: Sigh.

Final thoughts:

Stacey: You know, I think we need to take what our friend Spencer said a few years ago and really run with it- we need to let these teas cool down before we really can taste all the fantastic flavours. I found that certain sips have more almond flavour than others- it switched between tasting more green, then more almond, then both. I don’t think I’ll have it again, because it’s not that special to me, but I am enjoying it.

Brooke: It kind of makes me feel nauseous. I don’t think I will have any more. I am a grump today.

Day 2: Mango Madness

Hey tea drinkers!

Stacey here to bring you on day #2 of our 24 day tea journey! Today Brooke and I were able to Skype over my lunch break allowing Brooke to wake up at more decent hour.  And with Ottawa being pretty dreary and Victoria being its rainy self, today’s tea was the perfect fit to add a little sunshine to our day.

Tea: Mango Madness

Mango Madness

Description: One sip of this tea and you’ll do anything to get your hands on more. In fact, we’re a bit worried about letting people get a taste. There might be riots. Looting. Traffic jams. It’s a lot of responsibility! But who can blame you for going crazy over this delicious white tea? It’s fruity. It’s refreshing. It tastes just like a ripe piece of mango. In short, it’s total madness.

Ingredients: Apple, white tea, candied pineapple (pineapple, cane sugar, citric acid, sulphur dioxide), orange pieces and peel, safflowers, strawberries, calendula petals, mango (mango, sugar, citric acid, sulphur dioxide), stevia extract and natural mango flavouring.

Brooke: Does this tea have apple in it? (Looks back to find our previous post from 2013) Ah yes, I only had a sip of this last time because I worried about my apple allergy.
Stacey: Do you want to risk it this year?
Brooke: Yeah, let’s do it! André is here if I need to go to the hospital.
Stacey: Can you drink it yet or is it too hot?
Brooke: I think we can drink it, here we go!

*sip*

Brooke: ARGH my throat!!… Oh actually , it’s quite smooth!
Stacey: Mmm, I think it has a lot of flavour but it is also very soft and delicate.
Brooke: This tea would make a good iced tea, but not in the same way sleigh ride would because this one is delicious and sleigh ride was not!
André: I agree. I think white teas make great iced teas, especially with coconut. This one tastes like coconut.
Stacey: It tastes very tropical. When I was talking to my Mom earlier it made her think of relaxing on an island.
Brooke: I love that your mom is playing along with us, too! Tropical may be too strong of a word, but it does calm me down and soothe me.
André: Hmm…You do taste the mango but it’s not overpowering. Very mellow.
Stacey: Do you taste a sweetness at the end of this?
Brooke: I wouldn’t have overtly noticed it, no.
Stacey: I didn’t either until the last sip….just as I suspected- they put stevia in it!
Brooke: It wasn’t in the old version of mango madness, I wonder why DavidsTea added it?
André: Now that you mention it, I do notice it is sweeter than it should be.
Stacey: Oh no, now all I taste it the stevia. It might be because my tea is cooler now, it wasn’t as obvious when it was warmer.
Brooke: Well, at least my throat hasn’t closed up!

 

Final thoughts:

Brooke: I really like how soft of a this tea is. It’s not harsh or too sweet, just a delicate reminder of the warmer days that once were.
Stacey: Aren’t you still having warmer days in Victoria?
Brooke: Well certainly warmer than Ottawa but unfortunately we’re not tropical here.
Stacey: Mango Madness doesn’t really make me think of December but it does make me think of the tropics. Good choice for the second day of December with all this wet weather.
Brooke: It’s like DavidsTea knew it would be raining!

Day 24: Santa’s Secret

Merry Christmas Everyone!

It’s Christmas Eve and thus we get to sip on Santa’s Secret! This tea isn’t much of a secret anymore since we’ve had it on the 24th of December for three years in a row now (see here and here). But as much as we’ve been harping on DAVIDsTEA for using repeats in their 24 days, this is one tea that we were were glad to see return again this year. MmmMmm!

Tea: Santa’s Secret

Description: Ever wonder how Santa manages to deliver all those presents in just one night? Well here’s the hush-hush formula. He uses a special combination of black tea, peppermint and spices – all sprinkled with real little candy canes. It’s both energizing and remarkably soothing. All Santa needs is one cup and his motto changes from “ho ho ho” to “go go go”

Ingredients: Black tea, peppermint, sprinkles, natural and artificial flavouring (vanilla maybe?)

Steeping Instructions: 1.5 tsp, 96°C, 4-6 minutes

Before heading off to visit Brooke’s sister, Lisa, Brooke and her parents were able to sit down with Stacey for a little Skype session to review the tea:

Stacey: It’s supposed to be spiced black tea this year…that’s new.
Brooke: I can smell the peppermint, mmm!

*sip*

Stacey: I love this tea!
Brooke: Mom, what do you think?
Cathy: It’s too hot to drink!
Stewart: The first note is a hint of butterscotch.
Brooke: Hmm, but there’s no butterscotch in here. There is vanilla though…
Stewart: Yes, it must be the vanilla that I’m tasting.
Brooke: I really love that this tea has a black tea base because usually peppermint teas are quite strong. The black tea mellows this brew out though so that the candy cane doesn’t hit you in the face.
Stacey: Ha ha, candy cane hitting you in the face.
Stewart: *Bonk*
Brooke: “Santa, his abuse is no secret.”
Stacey: Do you get any of the spice?
Brooke: Not really, but the sprinkles are adorable!
Stacey: I could drink this all year round! So minty!
Brooke: That’s the beauty of this tea, the peppermint is in the background acting as a supporting character.
Stacey: Agreed!

With that, Brooke and her family were off to the airport, ready to spend a Christmas in North Carolina. A little later in the day, Stacey’s parents came home from work and were in the mood for a cup of something hot:

Ken and Lorie (simultaneously): We’re ready for tea!
Stacey: I’ve got just the one! And we can add it to the blog!
Ken: So as you know, I don’t usually don’t read your tea blogs but I did read one this year. I wanted to tell you there were so many spelling mistakes!
Lorie: They are supposed to be like that, it’s the voice type feature. It’s supposed to be funny!
Ken: Oh!

*sip*

Lorie: It’s very smooth tasting…like eggnog.
Stacey: But that was yesterday’s tea!
Ken: It tastes chocolate-y to me.
Lorie: It’s very relaxing for Christmas Eve, I’m glad I get to have it after a day at work.
Ken: I like it but it smells better than it tastes. It tastes like one tea that we’ve had before, maybe Read My Lips?
Lorie: Yes, this tea is making me feel very mellow.
Stacey: But now you’re supposed to be all “go-go-go”.
Lorie: No-no-no.

Tea Vibes:

Using the voice-type feature on our respective devices, we were able to provide our thoughts on today’s tea:

Stacey: I absolutely love this city! It’s so christmas to me and I love doing it every year. It’s just perfect! So tell me, I know that’s a lot but seriously can I test.

Brooke: This, he’s pretty good. I’m probably a favorite of the whole box! So we’re happy to have them overall. I think that the government gets to stay on the bench in this. To you and I think that’s great. Merry Christmas! No I don’t, N.
